Today students observed and sketched the Kosher salt crystals that were left behind after we evaporated our salt-water solutions. Students discovered that Kosher salt crystals have a very distinct shape and pattern to it. They will be able to use this information later to determine a mystery chemical in one of our labs :)
Students also started filling out a study guide for our investigation 1 quiz on Thursday. Students will be asked to identify definitions for key vocabulary, methods to separate different mixtures and understand that a solution is a special type of mixture.

We completed an activity called "messin with mixtures" on determining the level of contamination of our "soil samples" by weighing the whole sample and its individual parts to find the percent of naturally occurring and contaminated parts to our sample.
Today we practiced more division, with a specific focus on what do to when you could not divide into the number (put a zero in the quotient). We worked with pages 215-218. At the end of class we watched a video of some students completing a division problem using their own catchy tune for the steps of division.
Homework tonight pages 219-220 Today in science we worked to try and separate a powder and water mixture and a salt and water mixture using a paper filter (like a coffee filter). Students used filters and funnels to attempt to separate the mixtures that we made. It was hard to see if the salt was "left behind" on the paper filter, so I allowed students to dip their finger in the filtered water to determine if they were successful in separating the salt from the water...to the student's dismay, they weren't ;) We are saving a bit of the salt water solution to evaporate the water as a means of separating the solution. We finished class by watching a video song by our favorite science teacher that we don't know, Mr. Edmonds!
We practiced more division problems as a warm-up. Students should continue to practice at home too. They have notes and examples in their math notebooks to practice. We reviewed the lesson on division patterns and practiced estimating quotients (pages 183-188) by chunking the first two digits and finding a compatible number to use with the dividend. (see pictures)
Tonight's HW: pages 187-188 Today we worked on using different methods to separate mixtures. Student groups made three mixtures: gravel and water, powder and water and salt and water. After observing the materials before and after putting each material in water, students used a cup and a screen to try to separate each of the original materials from the water. Tomorrow students will repeat the process with filters to see which of the materials can be separated with filters.
Today we reviewed using the traditional model for division and did a couple of practice problems together. We then worked to discuss division patters (ex 8 / 2 = 4 so 80 / 2 = 40 and 800 / 20 = 4). We connected this to the multiplication patterns that students worked on earlier in the year with Mrs. Ely. Homework tonight is pages 179-180
Today we re-watched the study jams video on mixtures then took a quiz to assess how much students were able to retain. We also read pages 1 and 2 of our Mixtures and Solutions books and took notes. Students will be reviewing vocabulary tomorrow and completing an activity.
Today we continued to practice long division completing problems on pages 171 and for some 172. We also went over student access to the McGraw-Hill website which all students have access to using the log-in (first-last, Alunchnumber: example john-doe, A12345). On this site students can access tutorial videos where adults walk students through how to solve problems from that lesson, printable homework pages, and games. I would suggest (and showed students) "Fact Dash" from chapter 3, lesson 3. It practices math facts and lists facts that students were in correct on to target their future practice.
Tonight's Homework: page 173-174 (yellow page group: Enrich page 8) We began our unit on mixtures and solutions today. We watched a study jams video and discussed the vocabulary associated with mixtures. Students then took the online quiz with the video and we reviewed it as a class.
Tomorrow we will be reading and taking notes. There will also be a review quiz on the concepts from the study jams video. |
