It sure feels good to be back to a normal day (even if the periods are mixed up). We reviewed the lesson on estimating sums and differences with fractions and took notes on a couple of strategies for determining if the fraction is more or less than half. We then went into a lesson (pages 678-682 in the book) on adding mixed numbers. Students did really well with this, but needed reminders at times to make sure fractions had common denominators and to reduce if they could.
Homework: page 681-682 **many students did not turn in Face Math today so this is homework for those students (you can check powerschool to see if it was turned in)

Students watched the video again about luminosity and apparent magnitude/brightness with the sub and took notes (pictures to follow tomorrow). Then they worked in pairs on this worksheet. I am hoping that students will be able to finish in class. If not, we will work on it again on Thursday in class.
On Monday, only my homeroom class had math, so they worked on their face math assignment. Many were able to finish...and they look great!
On Tuesday, students worked on a Tenmarks assignment to review what they have been learning (equivalent fractions, and adding/subtracting fractions with unlike denominators). I will be out again tomorrow (Wednesday) with my sick kiddo. Students will be working on estimating sums and differences with the sub. This is chapter 9, lesson 9 from the student book. Homework: Face Math due on Thursday 3/30 Tenmarks assignment due by 4/7 Wednesday's Homework- page 667-668 As a means to practice adding/subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, we are doing a "Face Math" activity. Students may not finish during class today, so feel free to ask them to see their "faces". We will finish them next week and I will post pictures :)
We worked on adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominators and also This is a review for most students. We took notes and practiced on Thursday with adding with unlike denominators.
We read a couple of articles from a Super Science magazine. They were on extreme hotels (super cool) and mosquitos (yuck!).
Homework: complete worksheet if not done in class Today we had a short class due and discussed converting mixed numbers into improper fractions. We watched a BrainPop video. Students took the following notes below.
Homework: Fraction Poster due Thursday Students worked on their fraction posters in class today. This was the only math period that they will be given this week to work on them. We reviewed examples and students were allowed to get their final draft papers. I have updated the Friday post with the digital example that we have used as a model.
Because of MEA testing this week, the only homework will be to complete the Fraction Poster. It is due on Thursday, March 23rd. Students were given their two fractions to compare on their fractions poster. We went over some examples (online) of what this looks like. Read the project description and checklist below along with a list of brainstormed examples. Above is the example created by Mrs. Karlonas for us. This is not the only look that can be used, it is just for reference with the examples and written explanations.
