Today we started our Photosynthesis unit with a Study Jams video. We wrote new vocabulary words in our science journals and a model of the "recipe" for photosynthesis. We compared the parts of the plant to human world components with the same job.

Because of MEA testing this week, I will only see each homeroom once for a double-block (Newtons today, Arbours tomorrow). We reviewed the homework from last night (Home Link 5-14) then took the practice test. At the end of the double-block, we reviewed the answers the practice test and students corrected their tests with the correct answers as necessary. We also talked about materials that students could use to study for their test, which is on Tuesday, 4/30. This list is on the back page of their practice tests.
Today we worked on dividing fractions by fractions. We used models again today to help students see what how the numbers change when divided by fractions.
HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOME LINK 5-14 UNIT 5 TEST ON TUESDAY 4/30 Today we started work on our final "practice test" for the MEA Science test. This practice test included a copy of the Answer Sheet that students will be using when filling in their answers (done on a separate booklet instead of just circling within the test itself). This is a new thing for students because of the move to the online format for the math/reading MEA. We will be taking the actual MEA Science test on Wednesday and Thursday morning this week.
Today we reviewed adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions with our math message. We walked through three problems to review the skills we had learned before break. We then moved on to modeling to solve problems where students were dividing fractions by whole numbers. We talked about how the answer includes all of the parts in the whole, not just the ones shaded in. The Arbour Homeroom talked about the algorithm for solving because we used our extension time to continue math. The Newtons will hear about this tomorrow :)
HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOMELINK 5-13 UNIT 5 TEST ON 4/30 (TUESDAY) Today we worked more with the multiplication algorithm for fractions but added reducing to the mix. We talked about two strategies: multiplying before reducing (common) or cross-cancelling to reduce before multiplying (super helpful when working with mixed numbers). See our notes and example problems below. W
We will continue to practice using the packet handed out on Friday, but students can also work on IXL M15. Today we reviewed how to make and use models for multiplying fractions. We had to really hone in on the model representing one whole for each of its dimensions. Students really started to see the connection between the dimensions and the area model. We used our work with the models to highlight the multiplication algorithm (steps to solve the problem). The class was pretty excited with how easy it was to just multiply the numbers. After finishing pages 176 and 177 in their math journals, students worked on IXL skill M15 (or challenge skills from upper grades) on multiplying fractions.
NO ASSIGNED HOMEWORK TONIGHT- KIDS CAN WORK ON IXL SKILLS SHEET IF DESIRED Students started working on modeling multiplication of fractions. While the "way" to solve these multiplication problems is really easy, understanding why numbers react the way that they do is critical in developing the number sense to be able to determine if an answer makes sense or not. We reviewed the work done with the sub and looked into further developing the models today.
HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOME LINK 5-8 Students worked on a gizmo related to our seasons and what we have been learning about how Earth's movements relate to the changing seasons, daylight hours, and length of shadows. Students will continue to work on this tomorrow (and possibly on Wednesday if we need more time) as a great extension to what we have done in the classroom.
Today we started working with multiplying whole numbers by fractions. We had a quick intro to "fraction of" in unit 3 but will go into more depth this week. Students worked on pages 167, 169 and 170 in their math journals today.
