Today we began to talk about what a saturated solution is and what evidence students can use to determine if a solution is saturated. Students used shaker bottles to saturate 50 ml of water. We discussed that we need to filter off the salt left at the bottom because it was not part of the actual solution since the salt did not dissolve. You will see that some students really got into their shaking :) This works toward our target of being able to model identify materials based on their properties and model that matter is made up of particles too small to be seen. We will work on other chemicals into next week.

Students took the Unit 2 test today and will work on the challenge and take a pretest of Unit 3 tomorrow.
Today we reviewed part of the assignment from yesterday to spend time discussing remainders and how to make decisions on rounding up or ignoring. Students then took an alternative version of tomorrow's test so that we could go over questions of similar difficulty and same content as the test that they will take tomorrow.
HOMEWORK TONIGHT: PREPARE FOR TEST ON UNIT 2 Today we continued our work with division using the lens of word/story problems where students had to determine what the meaning of the remainder was and what impact the reminder has on the answer to the question from the story problem.
We will use our math message this week to practice using mental division, traditional multiplication and unit conversions as we prepare for our Unit 2 Test. HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOMELINK 2-13 UNIT 2 TEST ON THURSDAY Today students applied our understanding of how to separate mixtures to develop and carry out a plan to separate a mixture of salt, powder and gravel. Students worked together to plan out and try their ideas. All groups were successful in the end. Students are working in groups to plan a Thanksgiving meal for 10 people. They are using flyers to find the cost of a list of items (appetizers, vegetables, desserts and of course, tukey). They are expected to stay in a budget of $100, while still having enough variety and amounts to feed everyone. Final projects will be uploaded tomorrow :) Students watched a quick video on mixtures and solutions. They took notes on vocabulary words heterogeneous and homogeneous (see notes below).
Notes for students: Heterogeneous mixture: can easily see and separate the individual parts Homogeneous mixture (solution): parts are evenly blended, cannot see or separate the individual parts. Substances in a mixture do not change when mixed Students worked with Mrs. Walsh--former CEMS math teacher--today (I am at a conference) practicing more division. She will be reviewing division, and helping students who struggled last night with the 2-digit divisors. Students will have the ability to self-select their challenge level (1-digit or 2-digit divisors) today but we will return to full-group 2-digit tomorrow on a fun sleuth activity.
HOMEWORK TONIGHT: DIVIDE IT UP OR DYNAMITE DIVISION----MUST SHOW WORK Students watched a movie on mixtures and solutions. We then did a sort to categorize the mixtures from the video into either just mixtures or solutions.
Today we practiced using equivalent names to mentally divide numbers with single-digit divisors. We then discussed and practiced dividing with two-digit divisors. Students worked on a self-selected challenge side to practice with two-digit divisors. The worksheet side started in class needs to be finished as homework.
