This week has been a crazy mess for our team. Carrie continues to be out with a sick little lady. She has had the kids work on IXL, watching a Marco Polo video, and a Story Works article. We have been supplementing a bit with work time on our science posters on the 4 Spheres. Students will have both class periods tomorrow to finish up on their posters.
Our Holiday Brunch is still on for Friday. Our team will be enjoying the goodies brought in starting right from the beginning of period 1. Just a reminder that this is for students only. Unfortunately, we do not have room to host our student families for this event. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Today we did a review from last year on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Students solved problems and used the answers to draw and color a character face. These will be finished up during free time next week if they were not completed today.
Today we took notes on earthquakes and their interactions with the four spheres. Students also began to brainstorm ways that humans and the spheres interact. These brainstormed ideas will be used on our projects next week.
We continued our discussion of interaction among the spheres by looking at natural disasters and how they would impact the different spheres. We were able to take notes on volcanic eruptions and hurricanes. We will finish tomorrow with the earthquakes and talk about ways that humans and the spheres interact. All of this work is leading to the project that we will work on next week in class.
We reviewed benching marking fractions to the zero, half or whole to estimate sums and differences. We went over the homework from last night and answered student questions.
The bulk of our class was spent learning about and practicing how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions. Students started a worksheet assignment in class that they will finish for homework. Students are able to use a multiplication chart (there is one in their planners if needed) to help with the multiplication and division. HOMEWORK TONIGHT: FINISH WORKSHEET P 4-9 (PRACTICE) We continued our work with identifying the parts of each sphere in a picture. Today we worked with a "contour planted farm". We first identified what we saw in the picture then identified ways that those parts interacted or effected each other. We finished the class by watching a video on the re-introduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park. The short video talks about all of the changes that took place (many of the positive) as a result of the wolves being back in the park. In the Arbour group we were able to start identifying the interactions and took notes. In Newton, we just discussed some of the changes and will take some notes tomorrow.
Today we continued our work on sorting fractions into groups of less than 1/2, exactly 1/2 and greater than 1/2 by looking at the gradients within the less than and greater than boxes. We talked about how the twelfths were going to be the closest to zero, 1/2 and the whole because their pieces were the smallest overall and had the least amount of distance from one to the next. We also talked about how to find 1/2 for any fraction (divide the denominator by 2) so that we could determine if the fraction was closest to zero, 1/2 or 1. We use these rounded to 1/2 numbers to find estimates of sums and differences.
HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOME LINK 3-7 Today in science the Newtons finished up with the video from yesterday and the notes.
Both classes worked to identify parts of the four spheres from images and we talked about the interactions among the spheres. This is a major component of this standard. Today we worked on sorting fractions into groups based on benchmarks (less than 1/2, exactly 1/2 or more than 1/2). For most students this took the class period, so we will be following up tomorrow to start making estimates of sums and differences.
There is no homework tonight! Today we continued our work with the 4 spheres with a look at ways that geosphere and hydrosphere are connected and ways that interact. The Newton crew ran out of time today and will finish the second picture of notes tomorrow.
