Today we continued our work on sorting fractions into groups of less than 1/2, exactly 1/2 and greater than 1/2 by looking at the gradients within the less than and greater than boxes. We talked about how the twelfths were going to be the closest to zero, 1/2 and the whole because their pieces were the smallest overall and had the least amount of distance from one to the next. We also talked about how to find 1/2 for any fraction (divide the denominator by 2) so that we could determine if the fraction was closest to zero, 1/2 or 1. We use these rounded to 1/2 numbers to find estimates of sums and differences.
