Today we finished up on the Seasons BrainPop activities with a review quiz. The last part of class was a final MEA prep where students completed two constructed response questions. Students answered the questions independently and then we reviewed and discussed them as a class. Next week on Tuesday and Wednesday students will take the three part assessment. There is no "studying" to do for this assessment because it is a comprehensive test that covers ideas learned up to this point (not just 5th grade).

Today we reviewed last night's homework and then practiced multiplying fractions by fractions and whole numbers. We have several students who have opted for cross-cancelling- yahoo!
Homework tonight: IXL (grade 5) M7, M8, M15 all to 80% (this is review and should take roughly 5 minutes per skill- students may use multiplication charts to help with reducing) We reviewed the BrainPop from yesterday and continued to work on the packet that goes along with it. We focused on the pattern of the changing seasons-specifically the solstices and equinoxes. We took notes (see below) about how the axial tilt of Earth causes the seasons and took the BrainPop quiz. We will continue working with seasons on Friday.
Today we watched a BrainPop video on seasons. The focus being how the tilt of Earth's axis causes one hemisphere to point towards the Sun and one to point away, changing the amount of direct sunlight that an area receives. We completed a vocabulary and fill-in-the-blank activity on the video. Tomorrow we will take notes and review with the "quiz" worksheet.
Today we reviewed the lesson from Monday on estimating products (how to round, and find compatible numbers) and answered all questions about the assignment from Monday afternoon. We then went into lesson 4 on multiplying whole numbers and fractions. We spent a good amount of time talking about how to make whole numbers into fractions by putting 1 as the denominator because whole numbers require only 1 piece to have the "whole". We took some notes (below) and practiced with pages 725-728 in the student book.
Homework tonight: page 729-730 Today we talked about how to round fractions to create estimates of products. There were three different types of examples: whole number multiplied by fraction, fraction multiplied by fraction and mixed number multiplied by mixed number/whole number. We reviewed the pages in the book (page 713-716) and did some independent practice.
Homework tonight: page 717-718 Today students took the pretest for chapter 10 (multiplying and dividing fractions). We will begin this chapter when we return from break.
Today we took advantage of the nice weather and had our science class outside. We began the process of MEA test prep for science. We we spend a few days going over these to see the types of questions that are asked on this test as well as talk strategy on how to best answer questions when an answer is unknown.
The official tests will take place during the first week of May. |
