Today students took the Chapter 2 test. Next week we start on adding and subtracting decimals.

Students in the Newton homeroom presented their Kettle Cove slideshows. The students did a great job on presenting their findings and whether the organisms were invasive or native to Maine.
The Arbours finished up on some work in science and studied for the Scientific Method Quiz retake. Next week we start on our next investigation: Flippers! Students worked on and finished up their Kettle Cove slide shows. The Arbours were able to present today but due to the unexpected early release, the Newtons did not have a chance to give their presentations. They will do so tomorrow.
Wednesday's classwork (a 2 sided worksheet from Super Science) needs to be turned in by all students who did not give it to the sub on Wednesday. Oh what a week! Our class has been working on traditional multiplication with a focus on two-digit by multi-digit. Students have completed the following pages for homework this week: page 135-136 and page 141-142. Students have also been practicing IXL (C1, C2, C3, C4, C8, C12, C13, C14).
Today my homeroom class pretested chapter 5 and I worked with some kids to review some of the earlier skills in the chapter (estimation. prime factorization and using exponents). The Newton's had a very short math class due to today's unexpected early release. Based on student self-assessment, I plan on still having the chapter 2 test tomorrow. If needed, some students can postpone the test until later to give them extra time to practice. Today we continued talking about estimation and worked with finding compatible numbers to easily multiply numbers in your head. We worked with pages 127 and 128.
Homework tonight: page 129-130 Today we reviewed distributive property and how to write expressions to reflect distributive property. We spent time discussing how to use distributive property with subtraction (like problem number 7 on page 124 on last night's homework). Most students were able to see the connection and extend the example. We will continue to practice as we move forward.
We then moved to talking about the uses of estimation, both in class and in real-life. Our conversation talked about how estimates should be easy to do mentally (takes 3 seconds or less). No Homework tonight! Today we extended the work that we did yesterday on modeling the distributive property and worked with the algorithm (process) to solve multiplication problems.
Homework tonight: page 123-124 Today we talked about how to break up numbers to make it easier to multiply mentally. This is called the distributive property.
Homework page 117-118 Today we looked at multiplication patterns using powers of ten. We talked about how exponents on a base of 10 indicate how many zeros are in an answer.
Homework tonight: page 103-104 Quiz on Friday (prime factorization, exponents) |
