Today we had a quick math class where students solved some addition and subtraction problems using money number stories. We used the extra class time to continue working on our Four Sphere projects, which are due tomorrow.

Today we reviewed the addition work that students did yesterday and discussed how to make number models using letters to represent unknown numbers. This extends the work that we started in the last two units. We then spent most of class working on subtracting decimals. We specifically looked at the importance of putting place-holder zeros into the decimal places to make sure that we don't accidentally forget to subtract when numbers don't have the same number of digits.
Lastly today we worked on reviewing how to explain the worth of a digit in a given place by using words or fractions. HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOME LINK 4-14 UNIT 4 TEST ON TUESDAY 3/5 This week we started our final project of our Four Sphere Unit. Students have begun working on researching a natural disaster (earthquake, hurricane, or volcanic eruption) to find facts about how their event impacted each of the four spheres. Additionally, they are showing their knowledge about how humans and the four spheres have positive and negative interactions. This work will be completed during class time. Students will get the paper for their posters tomorrow as well as the rubric. Posters will be due on Friday and students will present their research to their class. Below are some student samples from previous years. We have been working on adding (and some subtracting) decimals. On Monday we used hundredths grids to shade/color the addends and subtrahends to show the addition and subtraction problems. Today we moved from models to solving using the algorithm. For most kids this was a review from last year when they were taught to line up the decimal points when the solve the problems. We also worked on making estimates through rounding.
MONDAY HOMEWORK: HOME LINK 4-11 TUESDAY HOMEWORK: HOME LINK 4-12 UNIT 4 TEST IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, MARCH 5TH Today we worked on the final part of our coordinate graph lessons: using information to create coordinates to graph and answering questions based on the graphs constructed. Students did a great job on developing the coordinates and graphing them. Some students wanted to rely on knowing the pattern to answer the questions about the graph instead of using the graph itself. I reiterated that this is an introduction to a skill that would be built upon in later years and that using their shortcuts now will not prepare them for the harder skill to come.
HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOMELINK 4-9 Today we took a practice quiz on the 4 spheres. Students used Socrative to test themselves on what they know from this unit. Students were told to write down any questions that they got wrong or were unsure of so that they could go back and use those notes to study for the final test which will be on Thursday.
HOMEWORK: PREPARE FOR 4-SPHERE TEST ON THURSDAY We watched a video today about the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park and the amazing number of changes that occured because of it. We were able to find make interactions among the spheres in this short video.
Today we continued our work with plotting points on a graph. We added in the skill of being able to make adjustments to points using a specific pattern (doubling x, doubling y or doubling both). Most students finished this and worked on additional practice with plotting short words.
It seems that many students neglected to take their homework today, so I have linked it here, if needed. HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOME LINK 4-8 Students have been working on plotting points and identifying points on a coordinate graph. So far we have worked in the first quadrant. Students worked with Mr. Casey on Wednesday plotting whole number points (found on the intersection of two lines), and today we worked on how to plot points when the coordinates had decimals too (found between lines). Tonight students will choose two 3 or more letters (words or initials) to create on a graph then identify the points needed to make those letters- see the "gem" example in the pictures.
HOMEWORK TONIGHT: COMPLETE LESSON 4-6 GRAPHS- TWO WORDS/INITIALS OF THREE OR MORE LETTERS We used some online slides to take notes on the four spheres and ways that three types of natural disasters (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and hurricanes) impact each of the spheres. Notes are in student notebooks. Any student who was unable to finish with the notes can finish copying from the blog or print out the pictures and glue them into notebooks.
