Today students went around the school and surveyed people about their favorite Thanksgiving pie. We talked about using our manners lessons when asking- looking people in the eye when talking, letting them know what they were doing the survey for, thanking people for their time and saying "excuse me" if they needed to interrupt people.
We finished class today by taking our tallied survey results and turning them into fractions, decimals and percents. Tomorrow we will graph our results and work on some fun logic puzzles and grid-work activities.

Students are working in groups to plan a Thanksgiving meal for 15 people with a $100.00 budget. They are looking through the flyers to find items from their list. Tomorrow we will talk about coupons and allow them to see if they can get more for their money :) The conversations about finding the best deal has been funny to listen to! Today we finished reviewing for our assessment using the variables packets and the slide show from last night's blog post. We practiced identifying the different types of variables and how to see if an experiment is a fair test or not. Students have their variables packets in their take-home folders so they can study at home.
FAIR TEST ASSESSMENT TOMORROW Today we reviewed writing division number stories with a specific answer. Students enjoy being creative, but we have talked about making sure that the math still works. The class has loved sharing their number stories. The instructional part of class worked more with interpreting the remainder. Building upon our work in the last unit, students now needed to decide if the remainder could be reported as a fraction. The Arbours had enough time at the end of the period to play a tic-tac-toe game related to interpreting what to do with the remainder in the division number stories. HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOME LINK 3-3 On Monday students had a sub who started work on the summaries from our class article, "Into the Storm". On Tuesday students took a practice test to help us get ready for the assessment on Friday. It did not really go as planned, so I went back to the drawing board. We worked today on being able to identify the different types of variables from an experiment: manipulated (what you purposefully change or test), responding (what the result is or what you expect to change to show success) and controlled (all of the variables that need to be kept the same so that you know that only the manipulated variable caused the change in data). We talked through several examples from a packet, which we will finish tomorrow during class. We spent the last 10 minutes running through example experiments so that we could analyze if the student had conducted a fair test, what evidence we used to make our decisions and what improvements we could make (even if it was a fair test). Sorry for my tardy blog posts...it has been germ central in my house but I think we are all back up and running again. On Monday students took the Unit 3 pre-test. On Tuesday we did a lesson on modeling division number stories to help us divide up the parts of our whole. Students worked together on number stories in class and then worked on HOME LINK 3-1 for homework. Today we reviewed our lesson from yesterday with four new problems and then we flipped the process around to write number stories that would have an answer of a target fraction. As part of this, we talked about how fractions and division are related. HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOME LINK 3-2 Today students took their Unit 2 test. It took most of both periods for both classes. Next week we will pretest Unit 3 which is the start of our work with calculations of fractions.
Today we looked at the first Super Science summary that students completed in October. We looked at areas that each student could work to improve and talked about how writing is writing, no matter the subject. Meaning that many students did not pay attention to writing conventions (complete sentences, capitalization, and punctuation) in the first summaries. This was not scored on the first one, but will be on future summaries.
After returning the summaries (they will be put into portfolios on next week), students copied the notes sheets into their STEM notebooks for the new class article, "Into the Storm". In both classes I read the article aloud, stopping at the end of a section to look at captions and pictures/diagrams/charts. We then worked as a class to do the first, basic pass on our notes sheets (writing in blue). This is just to the get big picture ideas down, without specifics. Both groups were able to get through the finding more specific, important details about each of the first three statements in our notes (writing in green) and each group pulled out one quote (writing in orange) that would support a main idea. We will continue to work on this tomorrow if time allows after the Unit 2 test in science. Today students got their practice/pre tests back. We started class by having students look through their assessments to see how much they have learned since we took the pretest (10/4). Many students commented about how they couldn't do much of anything on the pretest but got most answers right on the practice test yesterday...how far we've come! Students then wrote down the IXL skills I selected to help practice the individual parts of the test. Students can also use the practice tests to see how to complete all of the types of problems that they will encounter. Each practice test was corrected with answers and supporting work to show how to get any answer that I wrote in or changed.
During class, students could practice using the IXL skills or get extra support working with me at the back table. HOMEWORK TONIGHT: STUDY FOR UNIT 2 TEST! After finishing up the math practice test, students worked on typing up their Flippers Lab Reports and graphing their data. Some students were able to finish during class (or WIN) and turned them in. The rest of the class will need to complete them by 11/20 and turn them in (hard copies, not shared with me)
