Today we looked at the first Super Science summary that students completed in October. We looked at areas that each student could work to improve and talked about how writing is writing, no matter the subject. Meaning that many students did not pay attention to writing conventions (complete sentences, capitalization, and punctuation) in the first summaries. This was not scored on the first one, but will be on future summaries.
After returning the summaries (they will be put into portfolios on next week), students copied the notes sheets into their STEM notebooks for the new class article, "Into the Storm". In both classes I read the article aloud, stopping at the end of a section to look at captions and pictures/diagrams/charts. We then worked as a class to do the first, basic pass on our notes sheets (writing in blue). This is just to the get big picture ideas down, without specifics. Both groups were able to get through the finding more specific, important details about each of the first three statements in our notes (writing in green) and each group pulled out one quote (writing in orange) that would support a main idea. We will continue to work on this tomorrow if time allows after the Unit 2 test in science.
