Today we worked on identifying parts in a number story. Many students struggled with this on their homework last week, so I did a mini-lesson and mini-assessment (will not be in powerschool) to see who might need more support on this topic. The remaining time in class was used to review assessing reasonableness. We will continue to work on this topic throughout the weeks ahead as it is one of the tougher concepts.
NO HOMEWORK TONIGHT

Today we watched the second part of the Spheres video and took notes. At the end of class, I projected the picture below and students worked to identify parts of each of the spheres found in the video.
Today we reviewed last night's homework, practicing how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions. We watched a quick Brainpop video on this as well.
The majority of the class was spent talking about how to determine if an answer to a fraction addition or subtraction problem was reasonable. We looked at several different problems and talked about why an answer was reasonable or not. In all cases, I helped students to refer back to our number lines so that they could visualize what the problem looked like. HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOME LINK 3-6 Today we worked with placing fractions on a numberline, naming the fractions in many ways (improper, and mixed numbers) and then comparing them. Students worked out of their math journals. They were given a number line resource to use with their homework tonight.
HOMEWORK TONIGHT: HOME LINK 3-4 We started our new unit today. We will be learning about the 4 Spheres of our planet and how they interact. This unit is short and will wrap up before winter break (barring any more snow days!). Students will do a research project and have a test.
Today we watched a video on two of the four spheres (geosphere and biosphere). Students took notes during the second watching, and we shared out and recorded them. Because of the 2-hour delay today, we had very short (roughly 20 minutes) classes. We used the time to review writing division number stories and how to interpret the remainder and decide what to do with it (round-up the quotient, ignore the remainder, or report it as a fraction). All work was done in class and there is no homework tonight.
