We reviewed and collected last night's homework on converting fractions to decimals. Today we practiced some IXL skills as review (K2, K3, K4, K6, K7, K10). These skills will be practiced periodically over the next week or two, but it is not homework.
Tomorrow, we will be starting on a comparing fractions poster. We presented our 4- Sphere Projects today. Each student showed his or her poster and shared one way that their event impacted each of the 4 spheres. Students did a great job on their research and produced some amazing posters!
Today we reviewed the lesson from Monday on the connection between division and fractions and students turned in their homework. We then worked on lesson 8 which deals with the connection between fractions and decimals. We talked about how to convert fractions into equivalent fractions with denominators of 10, 100, and 1000 and reviewed decimal place value.
Homework tonight: page 599-600, students must show their fractions on numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6. Students read an article from a Super Science magazine on how warming ocean waters are impacting coral reefs. Students completed a worksheet about the article. Some students were able to finish early and got time to work on their 4-sphere project which is due tomorrow. On the project, students are expected to have 3 facts per sphere about how their event (hurricane, earthquake or volcanic eruption) impacted each sphere. For example, a student might write in the biosphere box "52,000 people were killed". All sphere boxes must have a graphic to represent that sphere. For example, in the geosphere students could draw a mountain or another landform.
Homework: complete Super Science worksheet, if not turned in. 4-Sphere project due tomorrow, 3/14 Today we discussed how division and fractions are related as well as creating models to show how to break up wholes into fractional parts. We reviewed using the pages 551-554 in the book (lesson 1).
Homework tonight: page 555-556, must show a model for problem number 1 We will spend the rest of this week working on the Sphere Project assigned yesterday. We have been doing a lot of prep-work talking about how different things can affect the 4 Spheres of our planet. We did an example on the board yesterday to help students understand their research task. Students had the option of using the graphic organizer that I created to help with their note-taking or doing one of their own design. Students will be given the final copy paper when all of their research is done (or before leaving class on Friday). The project is due on Tuesday, March 14th. Today most students spent the period finishing up their skills assessment from Monday and Tuesday. Students who finished early had time to work on missing or redo work, or if done with those assignments, on current work. Some put the finishing touches on their social studies post cards, other worked on IXL or silent reading. A few students will need to finish their assessments in WIN today but we will be returning to regular class work tomorrow (and having homework).
Students are taking a skills assessment over the next two days. All 5th graders are taking this assessment for the purpose of having a standard measure of skills across the grade level. This is not a graded assessment and will not be included in their PowerSchool grades.
No class homework Monday or Tuesday: complete any missing work or redo assignments Today we practiced two more methods for comparing fractions. Most kids agree that method 3 is the way to go! We practiced the two methods together and then independently. We will continue work with comparing next week.
