We continued working on division today, with a focus on 2-digit divisors. We practiced different levels of difficulty (dividing by 10 versus dividing by 42) and students self-selected their class work based on where they felt their level of challenge would be. Homework tonight is based on that self-selection, so you will need to check in with your child.
Homework tonight: P35(clown side) complete 10 of the 12 problems, do 15 minutes of IXL (D3 or D11) P36 complete 6 problems, do 15 minutes of IXL (D11 or D13)

Today the Newton's presented their Constellation Projects- what a great group of diverse projects...pictures will be posted once they are hung up :)
The Arbours read an article on volcanos and answered questions about the types of volcanos and their characteristics. Then they researched different methods to prevent injury and damage. We continued our work with traditional division today, practicing our 4 math facts as we solved the division problems. We discussed and practiced how to turn remainders into fractions, instead of writing "R" to indicate a remainder. As a whole group we practiced one double-digit divisor problem- this is where we will be heading next!
Homework tonight: pages 205-206 (some students who are working on 2-digit divisors are doing pages 267-268- they know who they are) Today we worked on a quick read in a Super Science magazine on the challenges that Koalas are facing in the expanding population and changing climate in Australia. Students read and answered questions on this article. Some students needed to work on finishing up their constellation projects that were due today and will need to complete the Super Science worksheet at home.
Today we started our work with long (traditional) division. Some students remember their work on partial quotients from last year, but most were completely new to division. We did some notes and practice during class (see below). Students have a green worksheet to work on. The assignments vary, but ALL students should have at least the 8 problems with 2-digit dividends completed. Three students have completely separate assignments, you can check in with your child about this.
Homework: division worksheet We continued research on our constellations today, with most kids finishing. If we have school tomorrow, class time will be used to finish research/start models. I have construction paper and markers/colored pencils/crayons at school, but other materials will need to come from home. Friday's class will be used to finish up.
Projects are due on Monday. Final Draft Doc (make a copy and replace areas that are red) We cleaned out our accordions today and left only the relevant work.
We also started doing a check-in on math facts (multiplication). We completed fact ladders for all (most in Arbour) facts 1-10. Students then graphed their number correct. Each day we will review one set of facts and use them predominately in our class. Weekly (starting on 1/16) we will do 5 ladders to re-test and graph the data. The goal is for all students to be able to fill out their ladder in 30 seconds or less (considered mastery). Students who have mastered all facts through 10 will start working on double digit numbers. Students will know which ladders to target for practice (10 minutes each night). This is added to nightly homework. Today we started a project that we will work on all this week during school. Students have chosen a constellation to research, finding information including the number of stars, where the constellation is located and the best time of year to see it. Students will do the research part in school today and tomorrow. On Thursday and Friday, students can finish their research, if needed, or work on the model. Below are pictures of examples models. Students need to have an item (marshmallow, pompom, star sticker, etc) to represent the major stars in the constellation and a way to connect them to show the constellation form. The models can also be paintings/drawings. Students may work on the models at home if desired. Projects will be due on Monday.
