We are going to be growing crystals in our science class on Wednesday. Each student will need a glass jar to participate. Only a few students have brought in their jars so far. These jars will be returned and do not need to be new. I suggested that students raid their recycle bins for spaghetti sauce jars or salsa jars. Mason jars will also work well. The best jars should be taller and with wide mouths.
Several students have not finished their math ixl (assigned 1/19). This assignment has a final due date of Monday 2/6. Students will be given a grade based on their completion on Monday and will not be able to redo.
Skills assigned: 5th grade D3, D4, D5 must go to 90% You insist on taking a picture (while stopped!!) of the car in front of you because the tail light looks like a salt crystal and you can't want to show your class!
Students worked in groups to determine which salt solution was more concentrated. They were unable to use the methods from Wednesday's class (color, taste and smell) so we determined that if we weighed equal amounts of the different solutions, that the one that weighed the most was most concentrated. This happens because there is more solute in the same amount of the solution, so it adds to the weight.
Our group is participating in the Arcademics Cup challenge. This is a nation-wide challenge where students play a multiplication game to try to make it to the top of the leader board in several different categories: fastest speed, most correct in a row.... Students had fun challenging themselves and each other in the games. The Cup is open until the end of the day, so students can continue to participate at home on the site: plus.arcademics.com and using their username and password (provided to them yesterday on a piece of paper).
Today students took a fractions pre-test to figure out what skills students have already mastered. I will use their tests to make flexible groups for instruction.
