Today we read from a Super Science magazine as we waited for our solutions to fully evaporate. Students read articles on Pluto and the aerodynamics of kite flying. There is a 2 sided worksheet to complete (No-Sweat Bubble Test and Another World)
Homework: finish worksheet (number 6 on the Another World side is not required)

Today students worked in groups to mix different substances and look for evidence of chemical reactions. Each group mixed two of three chemicals (citric acid, baking soda, and calcium chloride) with water and observed. We talked about whether or not each cup had a solution and what evidence allowed them to make that determination. We also talked about solubility and how one of the solutions may be saturated. In two of the three combinations students observed the solutions bubble/fizz. We began talking about how this is evidence of a chemical reaction because we did not put gas into the solutions, so it had to be created. We will finish our discussion tomorrow.
Today Natasha from CELT came to work with our class on learning about the distribution of water on our planet. The activity is a kick-off to our next unit on the Four Spheres but comes a bit early due to our many snow days. Ask your kids about making water chains and what they discovered/learned about where water is mostly found on Earth.
Today we took a pre-test on chapter 12 (geometry) so that I can figure out groupings/skills needed as we move into the next unit.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) is the multiplying and dividing fractions test Today students worked on creating super-saturated solutions with Borax soap. We used hot water and Borax to make solutions, then put our pipe-cleaner shapes into them for cooling. The results are pretty cool!
Today some students worked on a review of multiplication and division of fractions and mixed numbers and others worked on dividing for the first time.
Homework tonight: new to dividing group: page 31 even numbered problems only review group: finish both sides of worksheet (recipe and page 15 **Quiz on multiplying and dividing fractions on Thursday** Students took the quiz on concentration and saturation that was scheduled for Thursday of last week. We will do our super-saturated solutions activity on Thursday of this week. At this point, we are still in need of 3 boxes of Borax soap. Please let me know if you are able to donate one. Thanks!
Today we finished up our activity on subtracting fractions and graphing review.
Any student who did not finish, needs to do so for homework Students worked in their groups today to determine the concentration of three Kosher salt solutions. They used their prior knowledge to determine that weighing equal amounts of the solutions would allow them to see which was heavier, and thus more concentrated. All students were successful.
Homework: Quiz tomorrow, snow date of Friday Science experiment on Friday: still need 3 boxes of Borax, but we are all set on pipe cleaners! |
