Today we had a fun day doing our Pi Day activity a day late (because of the late start yesterday). We read the book Sir Cumference and the Sword in the Cone. Students enjoyed the many name puns throughout the book (like Lady Di of Amiter and Geo of Metry). Students then had the opportunity of being able to construct some 3-D shapes that we will refer back to later in the year.

Students completed a worksheet from our Seasons Brainpop video that was watched on Monday. We reviewed part of it today and will finish up over the next two days. Our focus today was on how shadows and the path that the sun takes through the daytime sky changes throughout our year. We worked through part of our "Mystery Science" program where we looked at different pictures and used evidence from the pictures (amount of daylight at a given timestamp, what people are wearing, the evidence of plantlife) to determine what season it was taken in. We will finish up tomorrow with how shadow length changes with the time of year (longer the closer it is to the winter solstice, shorter the closer to the summer solstice).
We talked today about the upcoming MEA tests (start next week) and what they can expect. Students also had an opportunity to play around with some of the special features of the online format. Over the next two weeks you will see little homework next week due to our MEA testing in math. Students can always work on IXL, Khan Academy Mappers or Mcgraw-Hill math games during this time.
Students in the Newton Homeroom were given a list of 5th grade-level IXL skills related to our fractions unit (5) which we are starting. Students took a pretest prior to our decimal unit test and will be grouped daily based on what skills they need to work on. Students will work independently on extension projects periodically throughout the unit. Today we continued our notes from the video on Friday. Students shared information that they had written from the video and we recorded on our class notes sheet. We then watched a BrainPop video specifically related to seasons and updated our notes with new information.
Today we continued our work with algebraic expressions and being able to identify key words for the four operations to help us know what kind of problem the expression is for. We also looked over the games available on our math online program. These are great practice and review of skills we have already worked with this year.
Today we watched a video on day and night and seasons and took notes.
Today we did a prompt to practice with expressions and writing scenarios to match a given expression. We sure have some creative kids! We finished the day working on converting between written expressions and numerical expressions using various math cards.
Today we had some students present their sphere posters then moved into our unit on patterns in space. We started looking at at why the sun appears to move across our sky. We will finish this tomorrow.
Students took a practice test today to help them know what to study for their test. Students can use work from their math journal, the practice test itself and the IXL skills below: G: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 H: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 U: 1, 2, 3 Unit 4 Test Tomorrow (3/6) Coordinates for the Christmas Graph
