Today we introduced the idea of powers and exponents. Check out these videos fmi!

It is DUE TOMORROW! Also, many students still need to complete IXL skills F2, F3, G2. To round out this mini unit, Period 4 students finished presenting their container projects. Due to the half day Period 8 will present on Monday. A final note on the MPA field trip: The trip to the MPA aligns with cross-curricular learning Standards with respect to Science/Math/Social Studies, however the key takeaways from the perspective of our specific project align with NGSS Standards: 5-ESS3-1.Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment. 3-5-ETS1-1.Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost. Today was devoted to sharing students' container projects! Lots of great work was done by all! They will be on display in the classroom all this week. Come in and check them out when you're here for conferences!
Today was an extension of Chapter 2, Lesson 1: Prime Factorization. Students brought their questions on workbook pages 83-86 to class and were given class time to finish these pages. Students also had a chance to view these videos for additional support. Take a look!

No homework tonight unless they have not finished pgs. 83-86. A great introduction to the container shipping industry. Thank you to the Maine Port Authority, Chris, our guide, John Holdridge, CEMS Volunteer Coordinator, and all the parent volunteers for making this such a successful field trip!
Today we began exploring prime factorization and factor trees. This is a challenging concept and we will likely spend the next class period working on it!
Homework: pgs. 83-86 (Students were given some in-class and W.I.N. time to work on this assignment as it is lengthy. They were told that if they have trouble finishing it to bring their questions to class tomorrow and we will devote some class time to finishing these workbook pages.) Last day to finish their repurposed containers! Can't wait for the field trip tomorrow and to show these off next class period! Such great work!
Today, Tim and Moby introduced us to "Factoring". This chapter, we ask the essential question: "What strategies can be used to multiply whole numbers?" Lesson 1 is all about Prime Factorization. Check it out!
