Today we worked on saturating solutions with citric acid. Students found that it took a lot more citric acid than kosher salt to saturate 50 ml of water. We talked about how this indicated that citric acid was more soluble than kosher salt because it took more to fill the same space. We also reviewed that when there is undissolved citric acid (or any solute) that it means that there is no more space to fit in the solvent. Students also made the connection with the rising of the water level indicating that even though we could not see the citric acid that we knew that it was in the solution. |
