At the end of each day I will be sharing out with you what your child has done in math and science that day. Any time students take notes, I will post pictures of those notes on the blog with example problems to help students if they get stuck at home. These are the notes we have left up from our current unit.

In late September we finished up our Volume Unit with a fun volume tower. Students had to cut out and construct 9 floors of a tower. They had to find the volume of each individual floor and then find the total volume of the tower. Students enjoyed the hands-on application of their learning. As part of our fair test unit we have been working on isolating and testing variables to see how they affect the outcome of an experiment. Today we worked with our flipper catapults to test if the angle of the base affected how far the projectile would go. Tomorrow we will analyze the data and draw our conclusions. On September 24th we did a group task activity that asked students to figure out how to stack 6 cups into a pyramid shape without their hands (or any other body part) crossing over the table. Students worked together in groups of about 6 with only one rubber band and 6 strings. Groups worked and failed on many trials so we came together as a group to share what was more successful and what was creating more challenge. Many groups agreed that too many people talking at once made it really hard to follow what was being said and that when some of the group members were distracted they kept on "messing up". Successful traits were talking one at a time- and in many having one "leader" to give directions, moving slowly, and being patient. When time ran out we had 2 groups successfully complete their towers and one that was very close! |
