Students observed and drew the crystals from our evaporated citric acid and epsom salt (mystery substance). The crystals looked very different from the kosher salt crystals that we evaporated several weeks ago. Students also wrote notes into their science journals about the saturation experiments that we conducted last week. Today we reviewed with a quick video and students read an article on citric acid and answered questions about it.
Below you can also see the experiment that Scarlett did by evaporating a salt-water solution dyed with red food coloring. The crystals still have the square shape with the x, but it is red from the solid color left behind after the liquid was evaporated. So cool, thanks for sharing Scarlett! Coming up this week, we work on determining which solutions are more concentrated than others using various techniques :)
