Students continued to work on the If you Lived in Colonial Times book- they read the books with a partner (some chose to work alone) and took notes. Later this week I will be giving them the product descriptor for the compare and contrast writing that they will do using these notes.

Today after we read aloud from Where the Red Fern Grows I introduced a new summary strategy that I want the students to practice: Somebody, Wants, But, So, Then....it is a great way to get them to distinguish the major details in a story and the ones they need to focus on when writing a summary.
Homework: IXL P1-4 Personal Pronouns- no quiz this week, just need to get to an 80 in each. In honor of Martin Luther King Day on Monday the students and I watched his "I Have a Dream Speech". I provided the kids with a printout of the speech so that they could follow along. We stopped a number of times so that I could explain what he was talking about and we could discuss what he was saying. Afterwards, we had a discussion about what else was going on in 1963 around the time of this speech and why his non-violent movement was such a big deal.
We started class with our IXL quiz and then since everyone in the Newton homeroom did their homework this week, and ALMOST all the Arbours we were able to have fun film fest Friday (the students who hadn't done their homework went in the hall to work on it while we watched the videos). Then everyone came back in we had read aloud for the remaining 10 minutes of class (we are reading Where the Red Fern Grows).
Students began reading the If You Lived in Colonial Times books today. Most students chose to read, discuss and take notes with a partner. They will be using their notes to write a compare/contrast essay - comparing their life to the life of someone who lived back in Colonial Times.
Today I shared the next book talk graphic organizer. We talked about the importance of students bringing their books back and forth to school so that they can work on their book talk during WIN and get help from me (and then they can use the posters in the room to help them figure out theme, point of view and figurative language!). We also used the calendar to assign everyone a due date for their book talk- everyone wrote their due date in their planners. I was able to read aloud Where the Red Fern Grows for the last 7 minutes of class.
Homework: IXL BBB1-3 Reasons and Support- Reminder, no fun film fest frieday unless every student does their homework! Today we began class by recapping what we learned about the Pilgrims- they did such an awesome job stating all the important facts we learned! Afterwards, we read a bit about the Puitains. I had the kids in their groups pretend they were William Bradford and his fellow Puritains- hoping to create a new colony that would be a model to the world for how colonies should be run. I had them brainstorm what would be the most important things that William Bradford and his men would want to do in order to ensure an ideal colony.
Today the kids worked in the computer lab- finishing up their revisions and edits and then printing their final drafts to turn in. They have been working so hard on these- I can't wait to see the progress they have made!
Homework: IXL: BBB1-3 Reasons and Support Todays lesson was on the Pilgrims (Arbour students had double LA)- we focused on the mistakes they made and the traits that define them as a seperate group from the Puitains (every year the kids struggle to remember which group is which!)
At this point all students have met 1:1 with me regarding the edits and revisions they need to make on their personal narratives. Today as students finished I asked them to print their narratives- and then using the Transition Words and Phrases handout they had to highlight all the transitions they could find in their story. That allowed them to see if they needed to go back in and either add transitions or come up with different ones (for ex: instead of having 10 highlight transitions, but those 10 were all either After or Afterwards, they could go in and come up with some alternative transitions).
