I hope everyone has a wonderful break! We had a great time today at our team brunch and watching Harry Potter- even if we weren't able to finish the whole movie :) The majority of students were able to get all caught up on their work which was GREAT!
Please make sure that your child works on their book talk over vacation- all students are presenting their book talk either the week we return from break or the Mon, Tues, Wed the following week. I have noticed that many students haven't yet begun to write their book talk- remember, they can begin working on their book talk even if they haven't yet finished their book. Thank you all for the wondeful treats, cards, and gifts- it is much appreciated!

In Language Arts we finally finished Harry Potter- just in time to watch the movie tomorrow! I think the majority of kids really enjoyed the book. In Social Studies the kids presented their explorer trading cards to the class- the majority of them were amazing! Nice work!!
Reminder: IXL homework due tomorrow (N1-3 and O1-2), Figurative Language Book Talks- these are due right when we get back from vacation so students need to be working hard on these. Students should also work on their missing/redo assignments- they have them in their planners- if this work isn't completed by tomorrow they will be doing work instead of joining the team watching the movie. Today students worked all period on their trading cards- I also gave a lesson on how to print from the ipads so that students moving forward can print their own work instead of having me print everything for them. We are presenting the cards tomorrow.
Homework: Finish trading card if not already done. No late cards accepted! Today we read from Harry Potter- I left the kids hanging because I stopped reading right in the middle of the climax. We had a great discussion at the start of class about the requirements of their book talk and then used Harry Potter as our example the kids were able to articulate what they would focus on if they were to write a book talk about this book. Tomorrow we should finish the book and I am going to have the kids talk about what they think the theme is and why.
Homework: IXL: N1-3 and O1-2, Figurative Language Book Talk Students worked on their explorer trading cards today- we are presenting these on Wednesday so students worked today to get all of their information written in pencil on the card- that way tomorrow they can go over everything in marker, draw/print their pictures, and decorate. Anyone who did not get their work written on their card should work on this at home so that they are able to be done in time.
Retakes for the explorer test must be done before students leave for break- we are moving into Colonial Times when we return from break so it is best to take the test while the info is still fresh in their brains. Homework: Work on trading card (if necessary) Today I explained that this week they were catching a break with their IXL...they still had to do the IXL skills (see below), but we would not have a quiz on Thursday, instead students would get credit for just having it done (10/10 if they get to an 80).
We read Harry Potter today for the whole period- focusing on finding different types of figurative language (but no similes- those are too easy at this point!) and identifying different parts of the plot. I also explained that in most books that are multiple conflics, but you want to focus on the main conflict that goes throughout the entire book...same goes for main characters- books, like Harry Potter, have a ton of characters- but you want to focus your character descriptions on the characters who are important throughout the entire book and central to the plot....so in this case: Harry, Ron, and Hermione would be the main characters. I am hoping to finish the book before Thursday afternoon. Homework: IXL: N1-3 (Perfect Verb Tense) and O1-2 (Modal Auxillaries), Figurative Language Book Talk (see calendar on Important Notices page to see when the individual due dates are) Students spent today and yesterday working on their trading cards. As students finished their research they created a rough draft of the card in their social studies notebooks. When rough drafts were completed the kids would show them to me so that I can make sure they have all their information and their spelling, capitalization, etc is all correct. We will be presenting these in class on Wednesday.
Today we took our quiz on Adverbs- these were handed back before the end of the day- anyone who got a 10/13 or below on the quiz will need to retake this on Monday. It would be a good idea to either complete the IXL (if not already done) or do some additional questions for extra practice.
The Harry Potter sorting paragraphs were due yesterday (while I was out sick)- on the portal you will be able to see if I have recieved it. Anyone who has not yet turned in these paragraphs need to do so ASAP. Homework: Figurative Language Book Talk Today I introduced the explorer trading card project that students will be working on each day unitl vacation. After going over the product descriptor/checklist students were able to begin researching the explorer they chose to learn more about. We will be presenting these to the class next Wednesday (a week from today)
Today we focused on finishing typing our narrative stories. As students finished typing I gave them the rubric and explained that they need to use it to revise and edit their narratives prior to conferencing one-on-one with me.
Homework: IXL: V1, T1, W1-2 & Figurative Language Book Talk (see calendar on homepage for your child's due date). |
