Students worked on their book club work in LA. In Social Studies we continued our reading and discussions about the New England colonies- we also updated our notes with information we learned about how the geography impacted the colonists.
Reminder: Quiz on Monday on the early colonies- see posts from earlier this week about the information that you will need to know for the assessment.

We started our colonial times unit today. Like we have with all of our previous units we spent the first part of class setting up our notebooks using the essential questions for the unit. After our notebooks were set up we began reading about the New England colonies- specifically the geography and the industries the geography created in that region.
Homework: study for Monday's assessment (see yesterday's post) Today we set up our reading notebooks for this second round of book clubs. Everyone was given 2 copies of the note sheets for each sign post. We then spent time gluing these sheets into our notebooks so that we could keep ourselves organized during this unit. After that each group was given copies of their book that they are going to be reading this round and they figured out exactly how many pages they need to read for each meeting. A few of the groups decided that they wanted to read 2 books this round so they spent some time determining how many pages they will need to read in order to realistically be able to read them both and do the expected work.
I am very excited because this second round I was able to recruit other adults to help me facilitate the group meetings. This means that each group will have an adult that is reading the book with them and will be joining in on their discussions. Jonathan Werner (makerspace/library) , Amanda Kozaka (librarian), Joanna Payne (8th grade LA teacher), Stephanie Royal (guidance counselor), Sarah Hanson (social worker), and Jake Haugevick (intervention) have all agreed to give up either one or both (Sarah and Stephanie) of their free periods to join us. Today we finished reviewing all of the information the students need to know for Monday's quiz. They then spent the remainder of class either creating, editing, or studying their flashcards/quizlets. Below are pictures of all of the information that we reviewed. Reminder: Just have to be able to show 3 or 4 different ways the geography impacted Pilgrims- will not have to show every single way geography impacted the colony.
Students will be taking a quiz on Monday - the quiz will be on the 9 early colonies vocabulary terms (see words and definitions below). Some of the questions will be asking the students to use the correct word to complete a sentence, while the other vocabulary questions will ask the students to match the correct term to its definition. The second part of the quiz will have a map of the East Coast of the US with dots marking the locations of the first British Colonies (Roanoke Island, Jamestown, Pilgrims, Puritans). Students will have to write the name of the colony next to the correct location. They will also need to understand how the geography of the different colonies impacted the lives of the people /success of the colonies of Jamestown and the Pilgrims.
We will use a small amount of class time tomorrow to study, but the bulk of the studying will be done at home. Welcome back from vacation! I hope everyone had a relaxing week off. Today we did a double Social Studies block. We read about the Pilgrims and the Puritans - why each group wanted to come to the new world and start a colony- and the major differences between the two groups. We ran out of time at the end of class so we weren't able to get to the notes for today- so tomorrow we will start class by looking at our essential questions and seeing if we can answer any of the questions using the new information we learned in today's reading and discussion.
We will be officially starting our second round of book clubs later this week- in the meantime we are going to continue to have extra social studies the next few days so that we can get more into Colonial Times. On Wednesday we read the story, "Mystery at Roanoke" together as a class. Today the students used that story to answer a series of comprehension, critical thinking, and inference questions. They all did a great job!
Enjoy your vacations! In Language Arts we are reading short stories and doing work around comprehension, main idea, and figurative language. Today, the class also did a reader's theatre on the Emperor's New Clothes. Tomorrow students will be getting their social studies assessments back (the scores are already on Powerschool) and a retake will be happening on Thursday during WIN for any student who got a score of a 2 or below.
Homework: Read Book club groups had their final meetings today about the books that they have been reading. We will start round 2 after vacation with new books and new groups!
In Social Studies we focused our class today on how exploration of North America led to settlement - we learned about Spain wanted to add to it's wealth and power and their goal of converting local natives to Christianity. Then we moved over to the British and started reading about their first attempts at early settlements (today just reading about the mysterious Roanoke) Homework- study for tomorrow's assessment in SS (link to quizlet on yesterday's post) Students spent LA class prepping for their final (round 1) book club meetings tomorrow. In Social Studies students used class time to study for Friday's assessment on The Columbian Exchange and Spanish Armada using the Quizlet I created for them.
Homework: Study using the Quizlet (hyperlinked above) for Friday's SS assessment- remember: match is not an effective study tool! |
