Today we discussed 2 of the Essential Questions for our next unit of study-"The Age of Exploration"/Chapter 4. We then watched a portion of a documentary on this era as a preview to the reading they will begin tomorrow in lesson 1. We took time at the latter portion of class to pass back and organize several assessments into student portfolio notebooks.

Today's activities: Class novel read aloud, Identifying subject/object pronouns warmup/practice, and writing focus:- Students read the story "ELEVEN" and analyzed what the author did well...paying particular attention to recent elements discussed in class.
Today we continued our regular routine...Read Aloud to start class, extra practice on choosing correct subject and object pronouns followed by an activity on writing a strong introduction to a narrative. Students copied the chart of options for effective hooks into their writing notebooks and then I shared several exemplars of these so students could actually see how they worked.
We began class with our read aloud and then worked on identifying objective pronouns. Later students copied the Narrative checklist into their writing notebooks for later reference.
Today and Tuesday will be spent reviewing and prepping for the Chapter 3/Lessons 1 & 2 Quiz. This will be done by 2 methods..first students will work in pairs using teacher prepared flash cards. Next we will utilize the site Quizlet Live to add fun and a bit of competition to the review session. The quiz is Wednesday. Like the last quiz, students will have to perform only one section, the matching of the the blue vocabulary words highlighted in the textbook from memory. The other 4 sections of the quiz are open book and students can use their Cornell notes, textbook and exit ticket comprehension questions while finishing those sections.
Today we began with our class read aloud and then began a warmup on this week's IXL skills involving pronouns. The IXL skills for this week are CC-1, CC-2, CC-3, CC-4 & CC-5...with the quiz being on Friday, November 30th. We then practiced our writing skills, choosing a Thanksgiving moment to write about and then discussed what essential parts comprise a personal narrative and entered that checklist chart into their notebooks. We are moving into the final stages of writing their first formal narrative.
Today we began our review and study prep for the quiz on Ch. 3 Lessons 1 & 2. We used flashcards and Quizlet Live for this purpose. We will continue this tomorrow and after Thanksgiving to make sure students are prepared for the quiz. Like Chapter 2, the majority of the quiz allows students to use all notes and comprehension check exit tickets while completing this assessment.
Today we started class with our read aloud and then took last week's IXL quiz on possessive nouns. We then moved to the story "Peter's Chair" and used that to analyze a story arc or mountain. students will incorporate this type of graphic organizer into forming their personal narrative structure.
Students today read, discussed and took notes on the Moors influence in southern Spain and how the explosion of Arabic/Muslim ideas here combined with the advancements found in China by Marco Polo changed life in Europe and led to the renaissance and age of exploration, our next unit. students worked in pairs to finish the exit ticket questions on lesson2. The quiz on CH 3 lessons 1&2 will be after Thanksgiving break.
