This weeks grammar skill is Conjuctions- yesterday when introducing the skills I taught the kids about FANBOYS- this is a great way to remember the different conjuctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)...today I showed the class a blast from the past: Schoolhouse Rock- Conjunction Junction What's Your Function. Afterwards, we read a bit from Where the Red Fern Grows before working on our children's books. I reminded the kids that they should be working on these stories at home as well- especially since they are due on Friday. Homework: IXL BB1-2, CC1, DD1-2; Compare/Contrast book talk, Children's Book. Today we began learning about the Middle Colonies- focusing our lesson today on the geography of the region. I will post our notes tomorrow- we were unable to finish our notes on the lesson today due to time constraints. I also introduced the Middle Colonies postcard project which is due Friday, March 10. Students should be working on these at home- we will have some class time to work on this, but it is a primarily at home project. Please see the links below for the product descriptor and graphic organizer (students were given hard copies of these in class today)

Homework: IXL: BB1-2, CC1, DD1-2 (conjunctions), book talks, children's story Man this snow is really throwing a wrench in my teaching!! Today the kids took their social studies test and we were not able to have Language Arts- I wanted the kids to have the opportunity to take the assessment before they go on vacation for a week and potentially forget all the studying they have done! I know the kids are anxious to get these back, and I will do my best to get them back to the kids tomorrow, but no promises :)
We spent both classes today reviewing for tomorrows Social Studies test. In Language Arts I made sure that everyone knew how to sign in to quizlet and were enrolled in my course (so they were able to easily access the flashcard sets). I then explained how I want them to use the quizlet to study: They should go through the flashcards- any that they do not know the answer to right away- they should click on the star in the upper right hand corner. After going through the entire set the students should then practice the starred set of cards- removing the star as they learn the cards. Once they have no starred cards left to learn they should go through the entire set from the beginning again- re-starring any cards as necessary...and repeating the process until they are able to get through each study set multiple times with no errors. Only after they do this should they do any of the "games" on quizlet...I have found that the kids love to play the games and think that because they do well on the matching game they think they are ready for the test....but in reality they are often able to do well on those games without even reading/absorbing much of the material on the card.
In Social Studies class we played Kahoot and Jeopardy as a whole class. Hopefully the students feel more prepared than they did yesterday! Everyone should continue to study tonight in preparation. Test tomorrow! If there is a snow day the test will be Friday! We reviewed for Thursday's test on the New England colonies by playing a game of Jeopardy. All students should STUDY tonight using the quizlets that I created (make sure to study both quizlets- vocab and essential questions!!). It was clear today during our review that everyone needs to spend time studying!!
