Kids continued working on their US maps. Tomorrow will be the last in class day to work on completing these- so they will become homework after tomorrow's class for any student not done (many kids brought their maps home today to work on them).
Homework: Any student who has not yet mastered their states should continue to study each night.

Students continued to work on and finish up their point of view assignment from Tuesday. I corrected the worksheets as kids finished and worked with any students who struggled/got any wrong. Afterwards, the kids then worked on figuring out the point of view of their summer reading book and writing down a quote/evidence from the text to back it up.
Homework: IXL S.1-S.5 quiz tomorrow! We did not have social studies class today due to NWEA testing. However, yesterday students continued to work on their US maps.
Homework: States Test retake is this Thursday- anyone who didn't master their states will be retaking the test. Please study (Level one- all states national): http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm In Language Arts today I introduced Point of View. I explained the different types of point of view and gave students a handout (See below). Students then had class time to practice- they were given 7 short passages from books and had to highlight the pronouns in the passage and underline any thoughts and feelings. After they did those two things they then used their handout to help them identify the point of view in the passage. Students are handing in this worksheet so that I can see who is understanding the skill and who needs additional practice. Any student who needs additional practice will work with me during WIN in a small group setting. Yesterday when I was out students were able to get a head start on this weeks homework or finish up their book talk summaries. At this point all students need to be done with character traits, setting, and summary of the story for their summer reading book talk.
Homework IXL: Text structureS.1Determine the order of events in informational texts S.2Compare and contrast in informational texts S.3Match causes with their effects S.4Match problems with their solutions S.5Identify text structures In LA the kids took their quiz on this weeks IXL quiz. The majority of students did very well, but those who didn't do all of their IXL homework did not do well on the quiz. The retake will be on Monday- kids should make sure they are at a minimum score of 80 for each of the 4 ixl skills: U1, U2, U3, U4 in 5th grade/Level G.
In SS I handed back both the states tests and the IXL quizzes- kids put these assessments into their portfolios...because it was our first time doing this it took longer than usual. We watched CNN10 (kids world news told in 10 minutes) and then worked on our maps. Retakes for the US states test will be next Thursday. In LA today the kids worked on their summaries of their summer books- students that finished their summaries spent the rest of class reading their current free choice book marking them up with sticky notes to prepare for next months book talk. Homework: IXL U1-U4 quiz tomorrow!
In SS the kids took their states test- the majority of students did an excellent job- please check the portal to see their scores (I will hand them back tomorrow)- students that did not earn a 50/50 will be retaking the test next Thursday. After learning about regions yesterday, today we are using that information to fill in our own maps of the USA. Kids were given a product descriptor that told them exactly what they needed to label on their maps. They will also be deciding how they want to break up their country- using either location, physical, or economic regions.
Homework: States Test tomorrow! Study!! Today we continued to work on our summaries of our summer reading book. I spoke with both classes about making sure they have enough details in their summary to show that they really read and understood their book.
Homework: IXL U1-U4, quiz Friday Our class discussion today was all about regions- how geographers break up the land into regions in order to make it easier to study. Homework: STUDY STATES- TEST THURSDAY!
