We began class with our IXL quiz- the students who did their homework (the vast majority) did very well...those who hadn't done their homework did not. Afterwards the kids worked on revising their body paragraphs by including in the research they collected about their topic. We had a lesson on how to incorporate the quotes: According to CNN.com, "....." or CNN.com states, "...."

Today we learned about the Tea Act and the how the colonists responded....The Boston Tea Party!!
Homework: Boston "Massacre" propaganda FROM BRITISH PERSPECTIVE due MONDAY. Must incl: Title, Picture, 3-4 Sentences about the event Today in class we read about the "Boston Massacre" and discussed how the colonists used this event as propaganda. We had a lesson on what propaganda is and when/where they see it (advertisements, political elections, etc). After discussing the facts of the event and then how the colonies skewed those facts to their advantage I then had the students take a few minutes to write/draw how they think the British may have described this same event. We then talked about it as a class....how the British would be making sure that it is clear the event was the fault of the colonists- perhaps titling the article/poster "Colonists Start Bloody Riot" or "Colonists Riot Again"....
Homework: Create propaganda for the Boston Massacre from the British perspective. DUE MONDAY Must Include:
Today the Arbour class went to the computer lab so that they could research their opinion topics for their essays. The goal was for each student to have 3 quotes copied and pasted by the end of the period- one quote for each of the body paragraphs- the majority of students were able to do this. The Newton homeroom today worked on revising their body paragraphs including the research/quotes that they found yesterday.
Homework: IXL RR1, SS1-2, AAA1-2; Book Talks! Today in class we continued to work on writing the body paragraphs of our opinion essays. The Newton class used the period today to do some research online in order to gather quotes/facts/stats that they can add to their essays to beef them up. The Arbour class will be going to the computer lab tomorrow to do their research. While writing our drafts we are really focusing on organizing our writing- making sure we start our paragraphs with topic sentences and then spend the rest of the paragraph providing evidence that prove our topic sentence.
Homework: IXL RR1, SS1-2, AAA1-2; BOOK TALKS! We have begun writing our rough drafts of our opinion essays. Today we wrote a sample body paragraph as a class so the students could see how to take their persuasive maps that they filled out and turn it into a paragraph complete with a topic sentence and transitions.
Homework: All book talks are being presented in the next two weeks- see calendar on homepage! IXL: RR1 Analogies, SS1-2 Word Patterns, AAA1-2 Opinions We have officially begun our Revolutionary War unit! Yesterday we set up our notebooks with the 7 essential questions and then began reading about the French and Indian War. We have been talking about how the French and Indian War was the catalyst for all of the events to come. Today we read and discussed the Stamp Act- looking at it from both the British perspective (this tax is paying for the war fought on the colonies behalf...obvi the colonies should pay) and the Colonies perspective (no taxation without representation!).
In LA today we began our new writing unit- opinion/persuasive writing! As a class we discussed how to choose a topic for this type of writing- making sure we understand the difference between fact and opinion. After brainstorming topic ideas the kids then each wrote a flash draft of an opinion piece- the goal of this is to see what information we already have about our topic.
In Social Studies the kids were wrapping up their slavery projects and the students who were finished worked on their book talks.
