Hello 2016-1017 Newton/Arbour students!
This summer you must read a minimum of 2 books and at least 1 of the books MUST be one of the books in this packet. When we return to school in September you will each have to do a writing assignment in class about the book that you chose from this list. Please make sure that you choose a book that is a good fit for you and one that you find interesting- I have read all of these books and loved them all! You can certainly read more than one book from this list, but you don’t have to. We will be using the books for much of September so it would be best to either have your own copy of the book or take a copy out from the school library (the middle school has multiple copies of many of these books). Keep an eye on our classroom blog this summer: capenewton.blogspot.com Supply lists, reading lists and any other important information will be posted there. HAPPY READING! Ms Newton Realistic Fiction: Fish in a Tree by: Lynda Mullaly Hunt Lexile: 550 The author of the beloved One for the Murphys gives readers an emotionally-charged, uplifting novel that will speak to anyone who’s ever thought there was something wrong with them because they didn’t fit in. “Everybody is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.” Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions. She is afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb? However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think alike. Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea Lexile: 560 It’s the start of fifth grade for seven kids at Snow Hill School. There’s . . . But Jamie doesn't let his situation get him down. When his Uncle Frankie mentions a contest called The Planet's Funniest Kid Comic, Jamie knows he has to enter. But are the judges only rewarding him out of pity because of his wheelchair, like Stevie suggests? Will Jamie ever share the secret of his troubled past instead of hiding behind his comedy act?
