Today the Newton homeroom worked on reading their books and taking notes, some group members began researching the historical event if they were all caught up on their reading. In the Arbour homeroom 2 of the groups met: A Night Divided and Stella by Starlight and discussed what they have read so far- we went over questions kids have come across and I provided them with some background information about the historical events taking place in their books.
Homework: M1-M4, synonyms and antonyms

Newton homeroom kids finalized their book clubs and books that they will be reading. Reminder: Quiz tomorrow on K1-K7. In Social Studies we have been talking about the causes that will eventually lead to the Revolutionary War- we are talking a lot about cause and effect and looking at each event from both the British and Colonists perspectives. We did take notes today, but I apologize for forgetting to take a picture of them- I will try to remember to post the notes tomorrow!
Don't forget to turn in Boston Permission Slip! Today we began reading about the French and Indian War- I explained to the kids that this war kicked off a series of actions and responses that would eventually lead to the colonies declaring war on Great Britain and later their independence. We did not take any notes today, but will be starting our note taking tomorrow.
I introduced students to our next unit in LA today: Historical Fiction! Students will be put into book clubs and with their club they will be reading between 2-5 historical fiction books, preferably all about the same time period, and meeting with their group a few times a week. We will be reading our books each day in class- as a group they will be determining how many pages they need to read before each meeting- so students who are unable to finish the reading in class will need to read at home as well. We will not be doing another book talk this year- this in class reading unit will take the place of the final book talk. I provided students with a packet of titles and summaries and went over each book with them today- they then ranked their top 3 choices for me so that I could place students in groups.
Homework: K1-K7, Greek and Latin Roots Today we worked on part 3 of our movie review:Part #3 - Review (2 paragraphs)
Back up your main opinion with specifics. The readers already know what your opinion of the movie is. It’s time for you to prove it. In these paragraphs (paragraphs can be short- about 5 sentences or so), go into detail about several important things that stood out about the movie - use examples.
Homework: IXL: Q1-Q3, Finish your drafts of Part 3 tonight for homework (I asked students to write multiple different drafts) and if not already done Part 1 and Part 2 (intro and summary) of movie review must be TYPED by tomorrow. we are doing double LA blocks all week and will return to SS after vacation. Today we worked a lot on revising our summaries for our movie review. Students should finish these tonight for homework if they didn’t finish in class. Remember to use: Somebody-Wanted-But-So to help figure out what details you need.
homework: IXL q1-q3, finish Storks summary I apologize for not posting on the blog this week...I just kept forgetting!! I promise I will try and be better :) All week we have spent our first two periods of the day testing either in math or reading/language arts. As a result we haven't always had both LA and SS each day. In LA this week students have been working on writing their summaries of the movie The Storks using the Somebody-Wanted-But-So strategy that we have talked about a lot this year. We also spent a good chunk of time talking about the book talk and ways in which they can improve their book talks this time around- making sure they are being specific, giving details/examples, and that their traits truly match their characters and aren't just a random quote they pulled out the book.
In Social Studies I tried something different this week....on Monday I wanted to see what the kids knew and had retained from our Colonial Times unit without memorizing any flashcards. So, I gave all the kids the unit assessment and told them that if they did well on it and liked their score I would count it in the grade book....but if they didn't do well (got below an 80%) or weren't happy with their score they would have the opportunity to retake the assessment next week after studying. The majority of the kids did really well and were proud of their scores! Today in class we went over the test because I wanted to make sure that everyone understood the answers and those students who need to retake it were able to correct their tests while we went over it. These students should use this test to study for the retake...the retake will NOT be the same test, but will be assessing them on the same information- so all new questions, same content. Homework: J11-J12, Book Talks- presentations start the Tuesday we get back from April vacation! |
