I apologize for not posting on the blog this week...I just kept forgetting!! I promise I will try and be better :) All week we have spent our first two periods of the day testing either in math or reading/language arts. As a result we haven't always had both LA and SS each day. In LA this week students have been working on writing their summaries of the movie The Storks using the Somebody-Wanted-But-So strategy that we have talked about a lot this year. We also spent a good chunk of time talking about the book talk and ways in which they can improve their book talks this time around- making sure they are being specific, giving details/examples, and that their traits truly match their characters and aren't just a random quote they pulled out the book.
In Social Studies I tried something different this week....on Monday I wanted to see what the kids knew and had retained from our Colonial Times unit without memorizing any flashcards. So, I gave all the kids the unit assessment and told them that if they did well on it and liked their score I would count it in the grade book....but if they didn't do well (got below an 80%) or weren't happy with their score they would have the opportunity to retake the assessment next week after studying. The majority of the kids did really well and were proud of their scores! Today in class we went over the test because I wanted to make sure that everyone understood the answers and those students who need to retake it were able to correct their tests while we went over it. These students should use this test to study for the retake...the retake will NOT be the same test, but will be assessing them on the same information- so all new questions, same content. Homework: J11-J12, Book Talks- presentations start the Tuesday we get back from April vacation!
