Today we read and discussed imports and exports- particularly the Triangular Trade, which was the trade between Africa, Europe and the Colonies. We also discussed the Middle Passage and the journey the slaves took from Africa over to the Caribbean and 13 Colonies.

Today we watched a video of a book club and the students made observations about both the positive and negative behaviors they noticed. See below the notes the Arbour homeroom created after watching. We are using this information to create book club contracts or norms that all members will agree to. Yesterday the groups were each provided with links to 2 or 3 articles or websites that provided them with background information about the historical time period when their book takes place. The students read the information, took notes on the facts they felt would help them understand their books, and jotted down any new vocabulary. In order for them to get the most out of their historical fiction books, it is important that they have a good understanding of that time period/event.
Homework: II 1-4, Conjunctions Today students each shared one or two things that they learned about the Colonies from reading the If You Lived in Colonial Times book prior to vacation. After everyone had a chance to share we then began reading out of the textbook about the roles of people in New England and then discussed import and why the people in Colonial Times imported goods, and why today we as a country import goods.
Today I introduced the new unit we are going to be starting: Historical Fiction Book Clubs. I gave short book talks about each of the books kids get to choose from- as I told them about the books the students wrote down the title if it sounded like something they would be interested in reading. After sharing all the books, students then ranked their top 3 choices and turned them into me. I am now placing students in groups that they will be working with for the next month or two reading and discussing multiple historical fiction books.
Homework: I.I. 1-4 Conjunctions In LA the students are finishing up the final drafts of their summaries- tomorrow will be the final day they can work on these. After students finished they were allowed to either read quietly or work on some of their redo/missing work.
In SS we talked about the Puritans and how the colonization of New England impacted the Native Americans who also lived there. See the notes below :) Homework: Students should work on any missing/redo work this week-you should have received an email from me today listing any assignments your child owes (if you didn't receive an email it is because your child is all set!) In La the students took their IXL quiz and worked on their summative assessment of summary writing. We also read aloud from Harry Potter for about 10 minutes.
In Social Studies we continued talking about the Salem Witch Trials- what had changed in the Puritan communities that led to something like this happening and how the Puritans changed afterwards. Today at the end of class we also started reading about the conflicts over land with the Native Americans. Today in LA the students all sorted themselves into their Hogwarts house on the Potter ore website. We are going to be using these houses for a few different things in class, including doing a persuasive writing about why their house is the best.
homework: IXL AA 7-9, book talk In Social Studies we did an activity around the Salem Witch Trials. I told the kids I would let them know if they were a townsperson or a witch. Once everyone was given their role I told them to form the largest group possible, without a witch in it. The largest group with no witches would earn candy...any group with a witch could not get any. After it was revealed that no one in fact was a witch. We had a discussion about how quickly they lost trust in each other and how it felt to be accused of being a witch. Many kids had been accused, and almost every student accused someone of being a witch. This lead us into the Salem Witch Trials - how innocent people were being accused and no one trusted anyone! It was a fun activity that hopefully got them thinking and gave them some insight into that event! We had read aloud today at the start of class. Afterwards we read about Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson- both of whom were banished from Massachusetts Bay Colony for daring to disagree with the Puritan leaders (well and Anne dared to think for herself...as a woman! How dare she!).
We spent all of class going over this weeks IXL skills. I gave the students two different handouts- one on independent and dependent clauses- this was a practice sheet; and one on simple, compound, and complex sentences. They should use these handouts to help them complete the homework.
If students struggle on this weeks IXL homework please go here: https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/grammar/syntax-sentences-and-clauses There are some great videos that explain the various skills and also offer some practice. If this link doesn't work (on the ipads it seems to take you to just the main khan academy site for some reason)- students can just use the search feature on the khan site and search: simple, compound, complex sentences.
