With the late start today our whole schedule was all wacky: super short morning classes, and close to normal length afternoon classes. The Newton homeroom was behind the Arbour's in LA so we used LA class and WIN today to get caught up on our summaries. Both homerooms had read aloud- which they all seem to be really enjoying. I also spoke with both classes about making sure they start their IXL homework- many students haven't started any of it yet- and we have a quiz Friday. I can't help them if they struggle, if they don't even start it until Thursday night. We also had a discussion about not wanting to dig a hole they can't get out of in terms of missing/redo work.
In Social Studies the Arbour homeroom was able to catch up to the Newtons. We finished our notes on New Netherlands and then began talking about how we are going to move into the study of the 13 Colonies...and how we are going to break them up by region, always beginning each region with learning about their geography- because everything comes back to geography and the question: How does where you live, impact how you live? I informed the kids that at the end of the Colonial Times unit they will all be writing a persuasive essay about which colonial region was the best. We will be keeping this essay in mind throughout our unit and organizing our notes in such a way that it will help us when it comes time to start writing. Homework: IXL AA1-5, book talk (presentations start next week!)

Today in LA most students were able to finish their "Scout's Honor" summary and begin working on the next story- students are given 1 of 3 stories based on their reading level and will read and write a summary independently. I gave each kid today the rubric that I will be using to score their summaries- we spent time going over the rubric and explaining the difference between a 2, a 3, and a 4.
In Social Studies we finished up reading and discussing New Netherlands. The Arbour class wasn't able to finish their notes today, so I will post the notes tomorrow after they have the opportunity to answer our essential questions. Homework: IXL AA1-5 Sentences, Run-Ons, Fragments, Types, and subject/predicate...students should make a "cheat sheet" to help them using the explanation pages- particularly for types of sentences. Today we had a period and a half of LA class- we spent a good chunk of time at the start of the class going over this weeks IXL skills. I highly recommended to the kids that they start by making a cheat sheet for each skill before they start working- this will come in very handy. I will be available during WIN this week to help any kids who are struggling on the skills. Afterwards, kids spent time working on their summaries of Scout's Honor. The goal is for everyone to be done with their summaries tomorrow. Once students finish their Scout's Honor summary they will be given a story at their reading level (I have 3 stories that I will be choosing from) that they will then read and write a summary of using all the tactics we have learned. These will be a graded assessment.
All kids were given back their ixl quizzes from last week and their ss assessments. If they received a 2 or below, they should be grabbing an error analysis sheet from my room and completing it for homework. They can retake the assessment as soon as they are ready, but they must turn in the analysis with their original quiz. They can see me during WIN for help or questions about their assessment. Homework: IXL AA1-5; Book Talks- presentations begin next week! We had quizzes in both classes today- an open note quiz in SS and an ixl quiz in LA. Overall the kids did really well on both of them! In the remaining time students worked on writing a second draft of their summary- they seemed to have a much better handle on it today! I hope everyone has a great weekend....read those books!
Today we began learning about the colonies of New France (and the Newton homeroom began talking a little about New Netherlands at the end of the period) and what motivated France to start a new colony.
Tomorrow we will be having an open note quiz on Pilgrims, Puritans, and Jamestown. As long as student's notes are up to date they should have no problem on the quiz. You can find the notes we have taken on those three colonies below. We continued to work on our summaries today in class. I am noticing that a lot of students are still really struggling with what to include in a summary. I am hoping that between doing some more whole class modeling, and working with kids in small groups that we can get to a place where they are feeling more confident. This is def. a tough skill for all 5th graders, but an important one! So I want to make sure that before we move on the kids are really feeling good about how to write a summary.
Homework: IXL GG6-10- quiz tomorrow Students worked in small groups today to fill out a chart that they had started on Friday where they are comparing the 3 colonial groups we have focused on so far: Jamestown, Pilgrims, and Puritans. Students used their textbooks to help them complete the chart. At the end of the period we began filling out a chart as a whole class and talking about the different items we are able to put on there. We will continue working on this tomorrow.
Today students began typing their summaries of Scout's Honor. I provided them with a sheet that told them specific things in their writing that they were going to color code or highlight. This will provide them with information to help them revise....did they not have certain colors in their writing? Did they have too much of one color? We will continue working on these tomorrow.
Homework: IXL GG6-10- continuing our work on adjectives and adverbs; book talk Today's class we continued our work on summarizing. Using the outline we completed yesterday each student then wrote a summary of the story Scout's Honor. Tomorrow we will be looking at these summaries closely- seeing if we can identify in our writing specific things and then attempting to score ourselves. This is going to help us create a goal around summarizing to work on for the remainder of the year.
