Today the librarians came into our social studies class to teach research lessons to our kids- more specifically, how to cite your sources. It was a great lesson~ Thanks Ms. Kozaka and Mr. Werner!

Today in class I passed back the narrative stories that students wrote in the fall with Mr. Casey- students read through his feedback and then put these in their portfolios. We will be using these later this semester to reflect on our writing and then use the feedback to write a second narrative. Afterwards, we read Harry Potter for about 10 minutes. Then we went back to the short story we have been working with, Scout's Honor, and used the story to talk about Point of View, more specifically, how Point of View impacts the story. We had a discussion about how when you are thinking about how POV impacts the story, you want to think about how the plot of the story would be different if it were told in 3rd person omniscient instead of say, 1st person.
Homework: IXL GG1-5, Book Talk, Read 30 minutes Today we continued our discussion about Jamestown Colony and then began talking about New England Colonies, in particular the Pilgrims. See the notes below.
Today we continued our work on character traits. We used both last weeks short story and our current read aloud (Harry Potter) to discuss how to find and defend character traits in our reading. The big thing students need to remember is that character traits describe the character's personality and tell how how they usually behave...not how they feel or behave in one scene!
Homework: IXL GG1-5, Adjectives and Adverbs, Book Talk Today we read about and began to discuss Jamestown colony. We also learned about the difference between a slave and an indentured servant.
Today we started class with our IXL quiz on progressive and perfect verbs. After the quiz we had a lesson on character traits vs. character emotions. Please see the chart below...students should reference this chart while they work on their book talk at home.
As the title implies- it was not a normal day today! With our already shortened schedule, we then lost more teaching time to the math NWEAs. We had students stay with their homeroom teacher today (except for when they went to chorus, French or Music) and we did our on-demand opinion writing piece that is going to help the 5th grade LA teachers design and plan our opinion writing unit.
Homework: IXL FF6-10, book talk, read! So this is a weird week due to NWEA testing. Tomorrow we have testing in the morning followed by the kids doing an on-demand writing prompt during both the short LA and SS periods. Wednesday the librarians are coming into SS class to teach a research lesson...so no SS that day. As a result of no social studies two days in a row, I thought it would be best to have LA back to back today and then start our new SS lessons on Thursday- that way the kids don't just forget everything we learned today!
In class today I introduced this weeks IXL skill- it is really important that the kids read carefully and make themselves a little cheat sheet to help them do the skills and remember the difference between perfect and progressive verb tenses. After the mini lesson I read to the kids, while they followed along, the short story "Scout's Honor" by Avi. We took notes on our predictions while I read and then at the end of class began thinking about character traits. I am going to be using this story to work with the kids on reading strategies that will help them on their book talks. Homework:
Today in Language Arts the kids took their quiz on contractions- overall the kids did great! After the quiz we had our first "Fun Film Fest Friday" where I show a fun youtube video as a reward for the whole class doing their homework this week. Then in Social Studies we started with read aloud since we hadn't had time for it in LA. We read chapter 2 in Harry Potter. Afterwards we continued talking about Spain and why they wanted to start a new colony and examples from recent history that show that countries still today look to expand their power, money and religion. The Newton homeroom also began reading about Roanoake colony...the Arbour kids will read this on Monday (they got very into the examples from recent history!)
Homework: Read and book talk In Social Studies we set up our notebooks for our next unit- Colonial Times. I organize the units around essential questions which we then answer as we read the chapters together. Please see the questions below.
