Kids have been typing, editing, and revising their second narrative story this week. All narratives will be due on Friday. I am very excited to see how the kids do applying the lessons that we have learned this year to this second, teacher hands off, writing assignment.
Reminder: Figurative Language Book Talks are due the week we return from vacation!! Make sure your child is working on this every night- I noticed today that many kids have not yet started!

We have been working all week on writing our reasons into our outlines for our Age of Exploration essays. After vacation I will be teaching some lessons on how to know if a source is valid and give them tips on how to research effectively.
Here is the outline form that the kids are using for their essays: Body Paragraph 1 Topic Sentence: Reason 1: Evidence: Name of source where facts were from: Reason 2: Evidence: Name of source where facts were from: Reason 3: Evidence: Name of source where facts were from: Body Paragraph 2 Topic Sentence: Reason 1: Evidence: Name of source where facts were from: Reason 2: Evidence: Name of source where facts were from: Reason 3: Evidence: Name of source where facts were from: Body Paragraph 3 Topic Sentence: Reason 1: Evidence: Name of source where facts were from: Reason 2: Evidence: Name of source where facts were from: Reason 3: Evidence: Name of source where facts were from: In LA we took our ixl quiz today....many students struggled- but 16 kids not do their ixl this week, so this was clearly part of the problem. After the quiz kids worked on their narrative stories.
In SS we worked on the outline for our research essay- focusing today on just writing our 3 topic sentences for the body paragraphs. After read aloud today the kids continued working on their narrative stories in their writer's journals. We worked on stretching out the tension in the story to make it more interesting for the reader and provide a bigger pay off for the reader.
Homework: IXL D11-D15, Verbs; Figurative Language Book Talk Today students wrote a flash draft of their explorer essays- they used their notes from class to help them.
Homework: Study for tomorrow's vocabulary quiz! In today's class I read aloud the short story, "Eleven" and then each student went back and reviewed the story, underlining parts where they felt the writing was especially strong. I explained that one thing good writers often do is use mentor texts to help them raise the level of their own writing. Students then got out their writer's journals and began drafting an entry - trying to use some of the techniques that we noticed in Cisnero's story.
Homework" D11-D15 Verbs, Figurative Language Book Talk Homework: Vocab Quiz this Thursday- students should study their exploration vocabulary (see notes below). I encouraged kids to make their own quizlet or flashcards to assist them at studying.
We spent A LOT of class time today going over this weeks ixl skills. The skills themselves are not necessarily very challenging in isolation...but I have a feeling that when it comes time for Friday's quiz they may forget the difference between the perfect and progressive verb tense. I highly recommend that kids make themselves a cheat sheet...not just printing off the explanation page- but writing the explanations in their own words- and reviewing that sheet throughout the week.
After IXL prep we went over the narrative stories that the kids all got back either on Friday or today and students used the score sheet to write one attainable goal for themselves to make the writing of their next narrative better. Homework: D11-D15, Figurative Language Book Talk due after break In LA the kids took their verb quiz and then finished up their comic dialogue writings. In Social Studies we discussed the Spanish Armada and how England hired a privateer (or hired pirate) to attack Spanish ships and steal their gold and riches.
