Today was our last day of editing and revising our narrative stories. I will be taking these home over the weekend to begin scoring them. Next week we will be starting our mini unit on dialogue before writing a second narrative story before winter break.
Homework: D1-D5, Verbs; Figurative Language Book Talk Today's class continued reading and discussing about Portugal kicking off the Age of Exploration and how and why it took explorers so long to get up the nerve to finally sail around the Horn of Africa. We also discussed a little bit of the history of slavery- how slavery had existed for thousands of years, but that Portugal changed slavery by turning it into a business with the slave trade.
In LA today the kids continued to work on revising their narrative stories- at the start of class we went over my most common comments and made sure the kids understood them (see picture below). I also pointed out dialogue in our read aloud to the kids so they could see how it is formatted. I provided the afternoon class (Arbour homeroom) with a photocopy of the page that I showed to the Newton homeroom....my homeroom will get this handout tomorrow so they can also refer to it.
Homework: D1-D5, Figurative Language Book Talk Today we started chapter 4 in our textbook- Exploration of the America's. I explained to the kids that by the end of this exploration unit they will be writing a 5 paragraph research essay using our notes from class plus doing some extra research (don't worry- this first essay has a lot of hand holding from me!).
Over the Thanksgiving vacation I read and made revision suggestions on all of the student's narratives- the kids will have until Friday to revise their stories using my feedback. Kids should only work on these IN SCHOOL.
Homework: D1-D5 Verbs, Figurative Language Book Talk Kids today finished typing their narrative stories- I will be looking at these over the vacation to provide kids with feedback. When they finished their narratives, they worked on identifying figurative language in their novels. In Social Studies class we finished presenting the projects- kids did such a great job!
Only homework is to work on book talk and to get caught up on any late/missing/re-do assignments :) Kids presented their Native American projects today- WOW! Today I taught a mini lesson on figurative language. Please feel free to print the picture of the poster I made for our class- it would be good for kids to be able to reference it as they read their book talk books at home. Students then used IXL to practice identifying figurative language.
In LA today I assigned our next book talk- this months focus is on figurative language. We will be starting lessons on figurative language on Monday, but I wanted to make sure that kids had the graphic organizer so they could get started on the character traits and summary. After the students made their own copies of the document they got to work on their narrative stories.
In SS the kids watched the end of America Before Columbus Homework: C6-C11 IXL- quiz tomorrow, Native American Project due Monday! |
