Today we read lessons 3 and 4 on the Native American cultures of the eastern and western United States. In our ongoing effort to learn how to read a textbook for main ideas and supporting details and record the necessary information I shared with students 2 exemplars of the Cornell Notes system based on the Creek and Makah cultures. Students will use a similar template to investigate a selected tribe and record the necessary information. This will continue during the remainder of classes this week. Of course , the central essential question guiding all this work is: "How did the Native Americans use and manage the land in order to survive?" Happy Halloween and no homework.
Today we read a short story "Grandma's Garden" and used our helping sheet on types of figurative language to name, define and identify 8 kinds of figurative language found in the story. Next we did our third short writing exercise in our composition notebooks on a "First Time" (The first time I....") topic, following our entries on a person that mattered and a place that mattered. The IXL (E-2, E-3, E-4, E-5 and E-6) skills are the homework. A reminder that you should see students beginning to formulate rough drafts to fill in their book talk template due on November 9th.
Today we took the Chapter 2 quiz on lessons 1 & 2. There is no homework.
Today in social studies we organized our materials (notes and various handouts) needed for tomorrow's quiz on Ch. 2: Lessons 1 & 2 Quiz. Students will do a matching section on important terms (10) without benefit of notes and then complete the remaining sections (Multiple Choice, True-False and Short Answer) in an open book format using the notes and handouts previously mentioned. We spent the majority of class reviewing for the quiz again using the Quizlet Live game format and Flash Cards I created for this unit.
Today we passed back last week's IXL quizzes and filed them in our LA portfolio, read from our read aloud book "Home of the Brave", discussed this week's IXL/class focus on forms of Figurative Language (simile metaphor, hyperbole, idiom, allusion, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, oxymoron) and completed a short (15 min) free writing activity in our composition notebooks on a place of importance. The IXL skills this week are E-2, E-3, E-4, E-5 and E-6.
Today we concluded our study of early American civilizations by discussing and noting the major features of the 3 Mound Builder cultures of North America. (The Adena, Hopewell and Mississippians.) Students then worked on the exit ticket for lesson 2 covering pages 40-45. I will collect the exit ticket tomorrow after they finish it in class.
We continued our class read aloud "Home of the Brave" to start the day. After brainstorming a potential list of 5, Students did a 15 minute journal writing activity on a person who matters to them. The IXL quiz on G-3, G-4 & G-5 is tomorrow during Thursday's abbreviated schedule.
Today we participated in the CEMS mock election process being run by Mrs. Briggs in grade 6. Students participated by voting for the upcoming elections for Maine's governor, senator and representative. Afterwards we continued our study of the Aztecs and moved on to the North American Anasazi civilization. Students are learning major features of these ancient American civilizations that support the label "civilization"and are recording these on a graphic organizer chart.
Today we finished our initial baseline narrative writing account after our read aloud in "Home of the Brave." A reminder again of the short week and IXL quiz on Thursday.
