This week's IXL skills are G-3, G-4 and G-5. Students have been alerted to the fact that the week is abbreviated due to parent conferences , thus the quiz will take place on the 1/2 day Thursday since Friday is a a full day devoted to conferences. (No school for students that day) We shifted to the writing portion of the curriculum today. Starting today and going into tomorrow students will begin the personal narrative section by doing a 30 minute flash drive/baseline writing assessment based on a true story/account/event in their lives. This is not a graded assessment but rather an informal look into where is their writing on October 22, 2018. Hopefully as we progress, students will be able to look back and see progress from this initial baseline establishing activity. Further scaffolded activities that weave into the personal narrative writing skill will unfold in the following weeks.
We have been working on the topic of theme and have discussed 10 various vignettes where students have to read a short story and identify possible theme....finding "themessage"always promotes diverse thinking. The quiz for the IXL skills (G-1 & G-2) is tomorrow. We also visited the CEMS book fair as a whole class yesterday.
We have begun using the textbook in class and I have been reading to the class, modeling stop'n'go reading for a informational text. I am also modeling various styles of note taking and separating main ideas and key details that answer our essential questions. We have also previewed the vocabulary for the chapter. We are currently studying Ch 2 (The First Americans), Lesson 1 (p35-39) The First Peoples. There are three lessons in this chapter and students will study Lesson 2 Ancient American Civilizations next week.
Today we continued to discuss and fill in the Book Talk Template components of character traits, "SWBST" & POV using the short story Falling For Jazz. The students will use these templates for their individual book talks during the year. I will be assigning book talk #1 due dates soon. The IXL skills for this week are G-1 and G-2.
Today we finished exploring how to use the SS textbook and discussed the answers to the "Know Your Textbook Activity sheet.
Today we began using the textbook. Before actually starting CH2 we did a "Getting To Know Your Textbook" activity which enables students to learn how to use any textbook, locate information quickly and understand the design of all textbooks. Tomorrow we will begin CH 2 lesson 1. The large map projects are due Friday. Students who need to finish can work on these before school, at lunch, during WIN or after school.
Today in LA we continued our walk through of how to use/complete the booktalk template based on the short story ""Falling For Jazz." Hopefully students will see the big picture of how the weekly IXL skills compose the structure of the book talks. ( Character Traits, SWBST, POV, Theme, etc.) The IXL skills for Friday's weekly quiz are G-1 and G-2.
Students finished up their Geography Tests on States and Capitals and then continued to work on their large map projects. A checklist for requirements was provided for all students.
Students took the SWBST assessment on the story "Foggy Figure." If students finished, the remainder of class was dedicated to this Friday's IXL quiz on H-1, H-2 & H-3.
