We have just about finished putting our class books together for the poetry unit. I can't wait to see the final product! The kids have been working so hard throughout this unit. Students are not writing final draft copies of all of their poems and creating their own poetry books complete with a cover. They will have examples of all different types of poems that we learned about throughout this unit.

Students are reading the books If You Lived in the Time of Slavery and taking notes on any new information that they learn. Many kids are reading with partners and discussing, but some have chosen to work alone. When they finish the books they will be completing an in class project showing what they learned. We will be working on this for the next week or so in class. The kids have the choice of the following three projects:
Writing: 1. Write a persuasive letter convincing a slave’s master that what they are doing is wrong. 2. Write 2 poems about slavery: 1 from the slave owners’ perspective and 1 from the slave’s perspective. Music/Performance: 3. Create and perform a rap or music piece that conveys what it feels like to be a slave. The kids took an open note quiz today on the Southern Colonies. This wraps up the Colonial Times unit for us....on to the Revolutionary War!
Students are finishing up their submission for our class poetry books- PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU SIGN AND RETURN THE ORDER FORM TOMORROW- I NEED ALL ORDER FORMS BACK (EVEN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO ORDER A BOOK) IN ORDER FOR OUR CLASS TO GET A COPY.
HOMEWORK: IXL KK1-2, LL1-2, MM1-3 Here are the notes for our Colonial Times unit- students should make sure their notebooks are UP TO DATE
Students worked on their poems that they will be submitting into our class poetry book. Please be on the lookout for an order form for the book. In order for the class to receive a free copy of the book I need to have signed sheets back from EVERY family. You do NOT have to purchase a book in order for us to get 1 free book for the class- there is an option to just check "No"- however, you have to still sign it and check off that you don't want a book. That being said, you are more than welcome to purchase your own copy of the book if you would like. All of the order forms need to be returned to me by Friday at the latest.
Homework: KK1-2 Frequently Confused Words, LL1-2 Homophones, MM1-3 Multiple Meaning Words The Arbour class finished up Southern Colonies today- reading and discussing the section that the Newton's did last week. We focused on essential questions 6 (What rights and responsibilities did the dif. groups of people have in the Colonies?) and 3 (What challenges did the Colonies face?). We will be starting the Revolutionary War this week!
Sorry for the lack of updates- between testing and conferences all week I haven't had much time to post! In Language Arts this week the kids have been hard at work on their poetry- I introduced limericks the other day and many kids have been having lots of fun writing those. I also explained to the class that we are going to be making a class book of our favorite poems- I found a company that sent us all the materials we need to make our own book- each child will be writing and illustrating a page- and then when we are all set we mail it back to the company and they will be turning it into a hardcover book for us!
We haven't really had social studies this week due to testing- the Newton homeroom wrapped up Southern Colonies yesterday and the Arbour's will be finishing it up on Monday. Then we will be starting my favorite unit- The Revolutionary War! I am looking forward to being done with the MEA testing- we will be wrapping that up next week- testing only on Monday and Tuesday! Hope everyone has a great weekend! WE continued reading/discussing/learning about the Southern Colonies today. Focusing our notes on essential questions 1 and 2...please see the notes below.
Homework: NONE The students were very excited to learn that I was not assigning any IXL homework this week due to MEA testing (they were not, however, excited about the testing). After a 10 minute read aloud the students worked on their poetry packets. The goal is for everyone to have written at least 1 poem of each type by the end of class tomorrow...that gives us enough time to revise, write additional poems, illustrate, etc.
Homework: NONE (besides reading, of course) |
