Class began with the comma quiz, after the Newton class watched a video (Arbour class did not earn the video as they had not all done their homework) and then we had read aloud. The Arbour class worked on poetry in place of watching a fun film fest.
Today I taught a lesson on line breaks in poetry. We did an activity where the kids had to play around with line breaks- taking a sentence (or sentences) and re-writing them 2-3 different ways only changing the line breaks. You can see some of the work the kids did below. Afterwards when the kids began working on their own poems I encouraged them to revisit some of the poetry they have already written and rewrite them in new ways by playing around with the line breaks.
Homework: IXL EE1-5, Commas Today we began the last chapter in our Colonial Times unit- Southern Colonies! This is a pretty quick chapter so we will probably be beginning our Revolutionary War unit next week.
Today after reading a chapter from Matilda we worked on our poetry unit. As per usual I began by showing students a video of spoken words. I am hoping these videos inspire the kids and give them ideas of things they can write about. Tomorrow I will be teaching a lesson on line breaks and how they impact the poem. Homework: IXL: EE1-5, Commas In celebration of the start of the new trimester I had students clean out their accordions today. We recycled any handouts they no longer need, 3 hole punched any work that they could put in their portfolios, and then organized the remaining papers in their accordions. Students then put their graded work into their portfolios and organized them. Afterwards, I walked students through a habits of work rubric that Mrs. Arbour and I wanted them to fill out. The students scored themselves in 3 different areas and then turned them in....Kristen and I will be getting together and also scoring the kids on the same rubric. We will go over these at conferences next week.
We started class with the retake of Friday's quiz- the students who sought me out for help and/or did additional practice over the weekend did much better on the quiz. The remaining students? Well, let's just say, their lack of effort showed on the retake. After the retake I showed students another poetry performance- this one was Lin Manuel-Miranda performing one of his numbers from Hamilton at the White House- years before the play had come out. We did discuss that there is some minor inappropriate language in the poem, but I felt the power of the poem outweighed those few words. I then encouraged students to see if they could write a poem about something they have learned about in school. Homework: IXL: EE1-5, Commas Yesterday we had a fun class debate Middle Colonies vs. New England Colonies. The kids did a good job defending their thinking using facts that they have learned throughout the unit. Today kids presented their postcards- showing their maps and then reading their letters to the class.
Today's IXL quiz did not go well for many students....and after looking at my ixl report it's no wonder...many students did not do their homework. I will give the retake in class on Monday morning so students should study this weekend. After the quiz we watched another poetry performance and then had a discussion about the meaning the poet was hoping to get across. We also discussed how the beauty of poetry is that you can't put it in a box- there is no right or wrong way to write a poem! We finished up class with a short read aloud. Today we had some fun with metaphor poems. I wrote three metaphor poems up on the board, but removed the titles. The students then tried to figure out what the poems were about- some of them were pretty tough! Check out the poems below and see if you can figure them out! Kids then were able to try and write their own metaphor poems, or they could continue to work on their poetry packet. I also showed two videos to the classes of some poetry performances- I want the kids to be aware of how poetry can be a performance and how poets can write about deep subjects and get their message across through rhythm, repetition, and other elements. See the two performances below. Homework: IXL E1-4 Simple, Compound, Complex Sentences; All late/missing work due TOMORROW |
