Students continued typing their narrative stories today. I passed out the Narrative rubric to the kids and we went over it so that they can use this document to help them edit and revise their stories.
Homework: C6-C11 (pronouns) all theme book talks must be completed by THIS FRIDAY We continued reading about Marco Polo today- focusing on the amazing inventions he discovered during his travels throughout China. We also talked about how during this time in the world Europe was in what we call The Dark Ages or Medieval Times....and so the advancements in science and learning were especially amazing to Marco and would eventually help pull Europe out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance.
Today after read aloud the kids worked on typing their narrative stories into google docs. Tomorrow I will be passing out the rubrics that I will use to score them- students will be using these to help them revise and edit their narratives.
Homework: IXL C6-C11. All theme book talk presentations are due THIS WEEK. Today we read about Timbuktu and Mansa Musa and how he turned Mali into a center of learning, art and trade. We also discussed the importance of salt for food preservation and how it was so important and valued that it was often traded for gold! Towards the end of class we began to learn about Marco Polo- tomorrow we will get into all the wonders of China that he discovered for the Europeans.
Homework: Native American Project due next week! Today I went over last week's ixl quiz - reviewing for kids the trick to figure out for themselves if they should use I or Me in a sentence (get rid of the other part of the subject and see if you would use I or Me). Afterwards, I introduced this weeks pronoun skills...I apologized to the kids because I kind of threw a lot of information at them all at once. However, the point that I emphasized to them over and over again was to make sure that they read the explanation page and make themselves a little cheat sheet that they can look at as they answer the questions. I also provided kids with about 15 minutes of practice time in class so that if they got stuck or were struggling on one of the skills I could help them out right in the moment.
Homework: C6-C11 Pronouns we officially began our exploration unit today by reading about the Vikings and then following up the textbook reading with a brain pop video.
Tomorrow is the retake of the Native American test- please use the quizlet flashcards to review and study Today we went back to our narrative stories and students used our lessons from last week on exploding the moment and they chose a sentence from their narrative to explode.
homework: c1-c5 pronouns quiz tomorrow Students finished up their Explode the Moment writing and turned them into me so that I can read and grade them all. Afterwards, kids worked on either completing their book talk or working on this weeks IXL homework. In social studies we set up our notebooks for our next unit- The Age of Exploration- after they finished setting up the notebooks they continued on their work from LA. Throughout the day as students worked I called kids up to begin presenting their book talks to me.
Homework: IXL C1-C5, Pronouns, Theme Book Talk, Native American Project We continued working on "Explode the Moment". Today I gave all of the students the same portion of a story for them to explode: "I went inside and sat down. My boss handed me an envelope. She told me my services were no longer needed and that I was free to go." Before they were allowed to start writing they first had to brainstorm- so on a page in their writer's notebooks they brainstormed ideas for the following:
Thoughts Touch See Flashbacks/Flashforwards Smell Hear Feelings/Emotions Taste Actions They didn't necessarily need ideas for each one of those, but the more ideas they could come up with the better their final paragraphs will end up being. We will continue to work on this tomorrow in class. Homework: Theme Book Talk |
