Today students used their summary outlines from yesterday to begin writing their detailed summary for their September book talk. We also began class with 10 minutes of read aloud.

Today I began class by introducing IXL and explaining that we will use IXL all year to practice grammar, reading, and writing skills at our own pace- the skills are assigned on Monday's and they will take a quiz on that weeks skills on Fridays.
Usernames: firstinitiallastname@capeelizabeth ex: cnewton@capeelizabeth Passwords: lunch number After explaining IXL we practiced as a whole class this weeks skills....making sure that kids understand that if they get a question wrong it is important to read the explanation screen that pops up- maybe even writing down the tips that they give. I also introduced the strategy we will be using this year for summarizing: somebody-wanted-but-so-then....see the handouts below. Kids then filled out an outline for their summer reading books- this helps them pick out the most important details in the book and once the outline is done it allows them to focus on what sections of the book they need to provide more details for in their summary. Homework: IXL: Characters and point of view
We continued discussing natural resources and how where you live impacts how you live (see notes below).
Reminder: States test this Thursday! Study level 1 on Sheppard Software: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm Both classes had finished all of their LA work so as a reward we played Silent Ball in LA class- it was quite the hit! I am sure many kids will come home talking about it :) Social studies class was a little hectic today because during the Newton hr class we were called down for picture day- so we ended up setting up our class portfolios in that class and in the Arbour homeroom we played a Kahoot game on the ipads to practice our states. All in all it was a really fun day!
Homework: READ- use sticky notes to mark up quotes for character traits and setting in your current free reading book (start prepping now for the next book talk!) Today we began learning about natural resources- we had another great class today talking about the importance of natural resources and the differences between a renewable and non-renewable natural resource....and how these impact how and where we live.
Today was a great class! We discussed a few of the geographical differences in the county and how those geographical differences impact the people who live in those areas. Students that were able to provide examples of how geography impacts how they live got a reward in the form of a swedish fish....this was quite popular :) Suddenly we had a very engaged class! Enjoy the two homerooms singing our state song below (don't worry- the video is not public on youtube- you can only see it on this website) We continued working on describing our characters today and finding evidence from the book to support. While reading aloud I stopped multiple times to ask the kids to infer character traits based on what they just heard- they did an excellent job at this! I hope that these daily examples are helping them in their own work. Homework: Finish character 1 description in book talk tonight!
At the start of class we had a whole class discussion about why it is important to study history- kids came up with the fact that we don't want to repeat our mistakes...and then we discussed a few of the mistakes our country has made in the past that we have learned from (nuclear bombs, the draft, slavery, etc). It was a great discussion and hopefully got the kids to buy into social studies!
Today we officially started our first unit- geography! Before we could start reading/learning, we had to set up our notebooks. I have the students fold a triangle to show the start of a new unit. Then we organize each unit around important vocabulary and essential questions- this unit only has 1 essential question: How does Where you Live Impact How you Live? After setting up our notebooks we read a little bit from the textbook about the landscape of the United States and our National Park system. Homework: Study for the states!! Test 9/21 (see link below for a great website to help the kids learn the states!) We started class with 10 minutes of read aloud - I am reading the book Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate to the kids. In our book talks we are working on identifying character traits- so as I read aloud I asked the kids to listen to any character descriptions and raise their hand when they hear a description of one of the main characters. We had a lot of discussions about inferring traits- how just like in real life people don't come up and introduce themselves and say, "I'm Ms Newton, I am loud, funny, and sarcastic." Instead, we learn these traits by observing behaviors and interactions....the same is true in books!
After read aloud, the kids worked on filling in their graphic organizer- some of the kids finished describing the main character and moved on to describing a 2nd character, while other kids are still working on the main. Today they had to find quotes in their books to back up the traits and write the quotes and page where the quote was found in their organizer. |
