Students took their quiz at the start of LA today- a number of students need to retake this quiz- many of them it is simply because they did not read the question clearly (ex: question asked for complete subject, student gave the simple subject). After the quiz they worked on their research essays.
In SS we did a tiny bit of read aloud after CNN10 and then we begin reading out of the textbooks about the Pilgrims- we will finish up Pilgrims on Monday before moving on to the Puritans.

In LA students have been busy converting their outlines into a 3 paragraph essay. We are focusing on making sure we have transitional words and phrases at the start of all of our evidence.
Homework: IXL A1-A6- Sentences In Social Studies the kids spent Tuesday reading a handout on the Pilgrims and the Puritans and then answering 20 questions that go with the handout on those two groups. Today we started class with CNN10, read aloud (almost done with our book!) and then we reviewed the 20 questions. Tomorrow we will read out of the textbook and take notes on these groups- making sure kids really get the difference between the two. Hi Parents- So sorry I have been bad about posting on the blog recently. Last week my condo unexpectedly flooded when a pipe in the attic of my building burst...all five of the units in the building have to be gutted and rebuilt- so I have been rushing out of here at the end of the day each day trying to pack up my belongings and meeting with moving companies to figure out how we can get all of my furniture out and into storage for a month or two. This was why I was out last week and then again Wednesday. I am normally not one to miss much school so I apologize- trust me I would rather be in the classroom!
In LA and SS this week we have been focusing on finishing up our exploration research by tomorrow so that next week we can write our essays. We also began reading and learning about Roanoke and Jamestown colonies. This week in IXL students are continuing to work on adjectives and adverbs and they will have a quiz tomorrow on E6-E10. Students have also been presenting book talks to me in LA class and during WIN. All book talks should be presented by tomorrow, so if a student hasn't finished by tomorrow you will see a 0 in the grade book. Grades close next Friday so all missing, late, and redo work needs to be completed by then. Homework E6-E10, figurative language book talk (if not already presented) students continued to work on finding research to support their exploration essays that they are writing.
Homework: E6-10, adverbs and adjectives Today we officially kicked off our Colonial Times unit! We used the bulk of class time getting our notebooks set up (this always takes longer than I plan on!).
Today I taught a lesson to the kids on how to know if an internet source is valid. I had the students go to the website: www.allaboutexplorers.com and assigned each a specific explorer to research. They then had to decide if the site was a valid source or not using the criteria we had discussed: does it look like a professional website? does the information seem like it could be true? is it confirming information that you already know to be a fact? What is great about this site is that it mixes in factual information with ridiculous info - so when students just glance quick looking for a specific quote they often think this is a great site...but upon close reading they quickly learn that it is not! Hopefully todays lesson will help them to remember to read their websites closely when they are researching in the next few days.
