Kids didn't have language arts today due to the Newton Eimskipp field trip. So instead we chose our new read aloud book, The Land of Stories The Wishing Spell and I read aloud the first chapter. Then the Newton homeroom used the remaining time to either work on their gizmo for science (since they missed science today) or any past due work or homework.
Homework: IXL R1-R5, Book Talk! Class started with our ixl quiz- overall the kids did great on this skill this week! I was very happy with the results! Afterwards, we finished up reading Home of The Brave - we will start a new read aloud book on Monday.
Homework: Work on book talk Today we had a lesson on generating ideas for narrative stories. I was telling the kids how the hardest part of writing for me has always been getting the first words down on paper...but once I have the idea and get those first few words down everything just falls into place After a mini-lesson on strategies the kids began writing story ideas in their writers notebook and then they chose an idea and wrote about it.
Homework: N1-N4, quiz tomorrow! Book Talk Today we did a quick write response to the following writing prompt: "I'm really eager to understand what you can do as writers of narratives, of stories, so today, will you please write the best personal narrative, the best Small Moment story, that you can write? Make this be the story of one time in your life. You might focus on just a scene or two. You'll have only forty-five minutes to write this true story, so you'll need to plan, draft, revise, and edit in one sitting. Write in a way that allows you to show off all you know about narrative writing. In your writing make sure you:
We kicked off our Native American unit today, beginning with setting up our notebooks with a page for vocabulary and the 2 essential questions for this unit: 1. How did farming forever change the world/lives of early people? 2. How did the Native Americans use and manage the land to survive?
After setting up our notebooks we began reading from the textbook about how the first people may have come to live here in North America. Students only had LA with me today because we were at Kettle Cove during Math and Social Studies. In Language Arts we spent the first half of class previewing this weeks ixl skill: using context clues to help us with unfamiliar vocabulary. Some of the kids struggled with this, so we took our time going over it. It will be very important that kids start practicing today and working on it all week. Afterwards, we finished up practicing identifying themes in reading. Tomorrow we will begin our narrative writing unit - kids will be writing a flash draft in class tomorrow so it would be great to brainstorm some story ideas at home tonight. They will need to write a story about a true moment in their life.
Homework: IXL N1-N4, Book Talks, brainstorm narrative story ideas In LA today the kids took their quiz on the story elements skills that they practiced all week (V.2 and V.4). After they finished their quiz they finished up their theme practice from yesterday. In SS the kids responded to a writing prompt: how do humans impact their environment and how does the environment impact humans. They were able to use their notes and textbook to do this...we will finish them up on Tuesday.
please check on the portal to see if your child has any missing work or work they need to re-do- this long weekend would be the perfect opportunity to get caught up. Homework: Theme book talk |
