Today we read out of the textbook and had discussions around landforms and natural resources and how each of these impact where and how we live.

Students partnered up today and shared the story that they are planning to take through the writing process. As one partner shared their story aloud the other partner stopped them and asked probing questions to either find out more details or to get a better understanding of the story. The partner who was telling the story would take notes about anything that came up as a result of the questioning.
Homework: Read at least 30 minutes- look for those sign posts! Today we spent a lot of our time reading our read aloud book- the kids are really enjoying it and it has been exciting to see them putting our reading strategies to practice while I read aloud. They are really starting to do some excellent thinking and going deeper into the text! I have seen a huge change since we first started reading the book. The rest of class was dedicated to our narrative writing unit- today's strategy was thinking about a time when you had strong emotions- and list memories/stories about a time when you felt that way.
Homework: read every day! Don't forget - SS geography assessment next Tuesday Today was a double block on Language Arts. We continued to practice identifying signposts while I read aloud and stopping and asking ourselves the questions that each signpost makes you think about. I also introduced another strategy for generating personal narrative stories- this time we thought about a place that is meaningful in our life and listed memories/stories that we associate with that place. Students then had a good chunk of time today to choose a story idea from their list and begin writing it.
Homework: Read for at least 30 minutes- identify signposts while you read and stop and think! Study for SS geography assessment (next Tuesday 10/8) using quizlet. Students all set up Quizlet accounts and joined my "class" today using their school google accounts. Once students logged in I showed them how to use the flashcards to study for our upcoming geography assessment next Tuesday. Students should focus on using the flashcards only until they can correctly identify all 25 locations...then they can begin using the matching game and test options.
When students go to quizlet it is important that they log in using google (then use their school email and google doc password) Homework: Study for next Tuesday's quiz https://quizlet.com/_6vkpuv In LA today we continued our work on identifying signposts in our reading. The bulk of this work today was done through our read aloud. I had students identify signposts while I read- and they were able to point out all 3 sign posts in one passage of the reading! After they correctly identified the signpost we asked ourselves the questions that each signpost requires and then shared out our thoughts. I explained to the kids that this is exactly what I expect them to do at home while reading...pay attention and when you notice a signpost- STOP AND THINK! After read aloud, I passed back yesterday's tough question work and went over it with them. Tomorrow during WIN I will be working with the small group of students who scored a 2 on the assessment (and students who choose to come that scored a 2.5) and providing them with extra assistance and practice on this work.
Homework: Read for 30 minutes and put sticky notes in your reading when you notice a signpost- don't forget to think! |
