The remainder of class students continued writing and revising their narratives which are due no later than Friday.
Today we finished our discussion and note collection on lesson 2-Spain Builds an Empire. Students know are aware of the reasons, methods and motivations behind the Portuguese and Spanish explorers and conquistadores. We began our review preparation for the quiz on lessons 1 & 2 by using Quizlet Live. Depending on progress the quiz will be either this Wednesday or Thursday.
Student began their reading and note taking of Ch. 4 Lesson 2. The focus now changes from that of exploration/explorers to that of conquest/conquistadors as Spain builds its empire in the New World.
Class began with a warmup and review of relative pronouns. The weekly quiz on pronoun skills CC#6-10 is tomorrow. The rest of the class time was devoted to student personal narrative writing. Again, the soft due date for the narrative is Wednesday, December 12th with a final due date of Friday, December 14th.
Today we finished Ch 4 lesson 1 by discussing the Spanish explorers. Students now can recognize the reasons/ motivations for these Portuguese and Spanish journeys, the key accomplishments of the major explorers from these nations and how each nation had a primary person who possessed an idea that inspired those who followed to push the envelope a little bit further until the initial dream was accomplished.
after a quick practice on reflexive pronouns time was devoted to the writing of student narratives. Students are at various stages of the checklist...some are brainstorming a new story while others are choosing to improve on past journal entries. The vast majority are typing their rough drafts in google docs..some are choosing to write it instead. Students will be given class time during ensuing classes to progress through the process of revising the rough draft and editing the final draft. A soft due date of Wednesday, December 12th is the expectation with a final, (must) due date of Friday, December 14th are the targets. The week's IXL quiz on skills CC-6-10 is, as always, this Friday.
Today we discussed the note content from last Friday's reading of "The Portuguese Explorers." Students then read and took notes on "The Spanish Explorers" using standard format style with leading sentence starters to help guide their work finding main ideas and key details.
Today we practiced further on possessive pronoun forms.. ( those that act as adjectives and those that stand alone.) We then analyzed a student exemplar on revising an original, rough draft introduction. We next discussed the strategies for writing effective conclusions for narratives and copied this into our writing notebook. Lastly, I handed out and discussed the narrative checklist which should guide students through the writing process that we will use from today until Wednesday, December 12th when the final draft is due. Also of note: the IXL this week is C-6-10 as I have chosen to eliminate C-11 due to the extreme level of difficulty associated with this concept.
