I would like kids to all start keeping an online journal. I am going to create a google doc for each student and share it with you. I would like you to write to me every day (Monday-Friday). You can write about anything:
Read! You should aim to read for 30 minutes each day!
WIN Projects IXL (see specific skill suggestions below) Social Studies: IXL- 5th Grade- Social Studies- English Colonies in North America (if you click on the name of the skills below it should bring you directly to those skills) F4 New England colonies: religion and government F5 New England colonies: economy and conflict Language Arts: IXL: 5th Grade- Language Arts- Developing and Supporting Arguments R1 Distinguish facts from opinions R2 Identify an author's statement of opinion R3 Choose reasons to support an opinion R4 Identify supporting details in literary texts R5 Identify supporting details in informational texts Today in Social Studies I gave a mini lesson on introductions and then passed out a sheet to help them not only with their intros and conclusions, but in using transition words and phrases in their writing. See the handout below.
In Language Arts the students all had their book club meetings. I am getting some FABULOUS feedback from the facilitators about the insights and discussions that the kids are having about their books! I will be out tomorrow, but the students will be using LA class time to work on their book club work for next week and SS time to revise and edit their informative writing piece. In Social Studies students worked on their information writing about Colonial Times. They used the outlines they completed yesterday along with the topic sentence they generated to draft their paragraphs. Tomorrow I plan to do a quick mini lesson on introductions and conclusions.
In LA the kids used today's class as their final prep day for tomorrows book club meetings. In LA today the students worked on their book club meeting prep. During SS I gave a mini lesson on writing topic sentences. Afterwards the students worked on filling out a graphic organizer to outline their paragraph.
I started class today by providing the students with the product descriptor and rubric for the information writing piece they will be doing on Colonial New England. As we went over the rubric I pointed out what students need to do in order to get a 3 (meeting 5th grade standards) and what they need to do in order to push themselves in their writing and go above and beyond to get a score of a 4. We will be working on these in class only and students are expected to be finished with this by Friday.
Since the MEAs begin next week, I wanted to give the kids time today to familiarize themselves with the testing app, types of questions that will be on the reading MEAs, and the tools that will be available to them. As a class we logged into the testing app and then I explained what each tool was, how to access it, and then they played around with it- making sure they understood why it might come in handy and how to make it go away when they were done using it. After going over the tools the kids proceeded to do some sample questions that required them to read a passage and answer multiple choice and short answer questions about the passage.
In Social Studies the kids have been reading the If You Lived in Colonial Times books and taking notes about life back then. Next week we will be using our notes to write an informational piece.
In Language Arts the kids worked on their book club books and prep for next weeks meetings. |
