Since the MEAs begin next week, I wanted to give the kids time today to familiarize themselves with the testing app, types of questions that will be on the reading MEAs, and the tools that will be available to them. As a class we logged into the testing app and then I explained what each tool was, how to access it, and then they played around with it- making sure they understood why it might come in handy and how to make it go away when they were done using it. After going over the tools the kids proceeded to do some sample questions that required them to read a passage and answer multiple choice and short answer questions about the passage.

In Social Studies the kids have been reading the If You Lived in Colonial Times books and taking notes about life back then. Next week we will be using our notes to write an informational piece.
In Language Arts the kids worked on their book club books and prep for next weeks meetings. In social studies today we continued reading about the New England colonies and discussed the different roles and responsibilities of people in the community. See the notes below.
Today we had our make-up mindfulness lesson in place on Language Arts- the lesson today focused on kindness. Tomorrow we will have our first book club meeting for our new books. I have posted a picture of our "how to prepare for book club meetings" poster as a reminder for any kid who needs to finish up work tonight to be prepared for tomorrow. Mrs. Hanson and Mrs. Royal came in to our social studies class today to do a lesson with the kids on the differences between being rude, mean, and bullying. There were some great discussions in both classes about these topics and how it can be really hard to tell the difference sometimes.
In Language Arts the kids finished up preparing for Thursday's book club meetings. Students took their Social Studies assessment today. I have already scored them and put their scores into Powerschool. In Language Arts the kids read and worked on their book club meeting prep.
Students worked on their book club work in LA. In Social Studies we continued our reading and discussions about the New England colonies- we also updated our notes with information we learned about how the geography impacted the colonists.
Reminder: Quiz on Monday on the early colonies- see posts from earlier this week about the information that you will need to know for the assessment. We started our colonial times unit today. Like we have with all of our previous units we spent the first part of class setting up our notebooks using the essential questions for the unit. After our notebooks were set up we began reading about the New England colonies- specifically the geography and the industries the geography created in that region.
Homework: study for Monday's assessment (see yesterday's post) Today we set up our reading notebooks for this second round of book clubs. Everyone was given 2 copies of the note sheets for each sign post. We then spent time gluing these sheets into our notebooks so that we could keep ourselves organized during this unit. After that each group was given copies of their book that they are going to be reading this round and they figured out exactly how many pages they need to read for each meeting. A few of the groups decided that they wanted to read 2 books this round so they spent some time determining how many pages they will need to read in order to realistically be able to read them both and do the expected work.
I am very excited because this second round I was able to recruit other adults to help me facilitate the group meetings. This means that each group will have an adult that is reading the book with them and will be joining in on their discussions. Jonathan Werner (makerspace/library) , Amanda Kozaka (librarian), Joanna Payne (8th grade LA teacher), Stephanie Royal (guidance counselor), Sarah Hanson (social worker), and Jake Haugevick (intervention) have all agreed to give up either one or both (Sarah and Stephanie) of their free periods to join us. Today we finished reviewing all of the information the students need to know for Monday's quiz. They then spent the remainder of class either creating, editing, or studying their flashcards/quizlets. Below are pictures of all of the information that we reviewed. Reminder: Just have to be able to show 3 or 4 different ways the geography impacted Pilgrims- will not have to show every single way geography impacted the colony.
Students will be taking a quiz on Monday - the quiz will be on the 9 early colonies vocabulary terms (see words and definitions below). Some of the questions will be asking the students to use the correct word to complete a sentence, while the other vocabulary questions will ask the students to match the correct term to its definition. The second part of the quiz will have a map of the East Coast of the US with dots marking the locations of the first British Colonies (Roanoke Island, Jamestown, Pilgrims, Puritans). Students will have to write the name of the colony next to the correct location. They will also need to understand how the geography of the different colonies impacted the lives of the people /success of the colonies of Jamestown and the Pilgrims.
We will use a small amount of class time tomorrow to study, but the bulk of the studying will be done at home. |
